Yahoo Sports UK’s horse racing Lucky 15 – Friday’s top selections

Yahoo Sport UK has teamed up with Bet4Causes to bring you a preview of the day’s British racing – and The Night Hawk marks your card.

The Oaks is the third British Classic of the season and it takes place this afternoon at Epsom. Nine three-year-old fillies go to post for the Group 1 contest, run over a distance of a mile and a half.

Here follows the preview of today’s big race, complete with all Friday, 3rd June’s selections our idea of a Lucky 15 permutation (four singles, six doubles, four trebles and a four-fold) for the British and Irish meetings…

RACE OF THE DAY: THE INVESTEC OAKS (Group 1)

4:30 Epsom Downs, 1m4f, (3yo fillies)

FORECAST: Minding (10/11), Skiffle (6/1), Turret Rocks (7/1), Architecture (8/1), Somehow (8/1), Seventh Heaven (14/1), Harlequeen (20/1), Diamonds Pour Moi (25/1), Australian Queen (66/1)

ANALYSIS: What looked like being one of the races of the season following the 1,000 Guineas, now looks like it could be merely a coronation.

The defection of both Ballydoyle and Alice Springs, second and third in the mile fillies’ Classic at Newmarket, and the absence of Jet Setting, who won the Irish 1,000 Guineas by a head, means the way is open for MINDING (above) to earn a fourth Group 1 victory.

Aiden O’Brien’s daughter of Galileo won the 1,000 Guineas by three and a half lengths from her stablemates, before having her colours subsequently lowered by a head at Leopardstown, with soft ground catching her out.

While she should not be anywhere near as the restrictive 4/11 odds she was sent off in Ireland, she looks tremendous value at her current odds of 10/11, as her eight rivals would appear to have plenty to find on the form book.

Godolphin have supplemented the twice-raced Skiffle, following her length victory over The Black Princess at Goodwood in a Listed race, but this is a major step up in class.

Architecture was runner-up in the Lingfield Oaks trial to the O’Brien second-string Seventh Heaven, yet that looked a sub-par renewal of that particular Listed contest.

Turret Rocks was well held by Minding at Newmarket and the biggest danger to the selection may come from stablemate Somehow, who has won both her starts this season, including the Cheshire Oaks, where she had Diamonds Pour Moi in third.

Australian Queen and Harlequeen appear to be looking for place money at best.

WINNER: MINDING

EACH-WAY: SOMEHOW

LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

MINDING (Epsom Downs 4.30) NAP (see above)

LEGENDARY LUNCH (Epsom Downs 2.00) can take the Listed Woodcote Stakes for Richard Hannon and Pat Dobbs. The selection was beaten a length by Sea Of Snow over 5f at Windsor last month and the pair meet on identical terms. It is felt that the runner-up can turn the tables on easier ground and will be suited by the extra furlong.

BOYNTON (Goodwood 6.50) hails from the Godolphin stable that unleashed the great Dubawi at this meeting 12 years ago. Boynton may not be as good as the first offspring of Dubai Millennium to ever hit the track, but be may certainly be a little less fiery than Dubawi was on his debut when he fought Frankie Dettori all the way. This juvenile, who makes his first racecourse appearance, is trained by Charlie Appleby and cost $750,000USD as a yearling. By the American bred sire More Than Ready, he is a half-brother to the useful 1m1f US Grade 1 winner Constitution, and should know his job in the 6f novice stakes.

DELVE (Godwood 8.50) sets a good standard in the concluding 1m fillies’ maiden and can get off the mark for Sir Michael Stoute and jockey Richard Kingscote. She was very unfortunate not to have broken her duck at Newmarket last time when going down narrowly to the 90-rated Summer Icon and looks worth following this season, as she should go on to better things.
