Yamanaka retains title in Japan

Shinsuke Yamanaka successfully defended his WBC bantamweight title for the first time with a unanimous decision victory over Vic Darchinyan in Tokyo.

Though the Armenian started strong, he lost control in the middle rounds of the contest and fell to his third title defeat in three shots at gold to scores of 116-112, 116-112 and 117-111.

The scorecards after eight rounds had revealed the two were quite close in the eyes of the three judges, but the Japanese champion finished with authority in front of his own to begin his reign with a win.

There was further Japanese success on the card when Takahario Aoh made his third defence of the WBC super-featherweight championship, also winning by decision against Thailand’s Terdsak Kokeitgym in a thrilling 12-rounder.
