Yekini dead at 48

Former Nigeria striker Rashidi Yekini died at the age of 48 on Friday after battling mental illness for two years.


Yekini, who rose to prominence by scoring the Super Eagles’ first-ever World Cup goal at the 1994 finals in the USA, was found dead at his home in Ibadan, south west Nigeria.

In 14 years of international football he scored 37 goals in 58 matches, and remains Nigeria’s record scorer.

A fearsome target man in his prime, Yekini’s most successful spell came over eight years in Europe, during which he played for Vitoria Setubal, FC Zurich, Olympiacos and Sporting Gijon.

After retiring in 2005, he had reportedly been suffering from bipolar disorder and an unspecified neurological illness.
