Yellow Jackets fall to Tift ahead of region playoffs

Mar. 15—THOMASVILLE — The Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets tennis team faced Tift County on Thursday night in the final region match of the regular season. While, both the girls and the boys fought hard, they ultimately fell to the highly talented Tift.

The boys had a very tough challenge as they faced an undefeated Tift squad. They were swept 5-0. On the girls side, they avoided a sweep, losing 4-1. However, the match was closer than the score tells.

Lady Jackets Heali Patel and Marlee Binion played very well, narrowly losing to Tift in two and three singles. The team of EmmaRae Smith and Ella Briscoe were the heroes of the day for the Yellow Jackets, however, as they crushed the Tift County number one double team in two sets, wining 6-2 and 6-1.

After the loss to Tift County, the Yellow Jackets sit with a record of 5-8 on the season. Heading into the region tournament, which will be head at the Houston County Tennis Center on March 18, the Central girls are seeded No. 5, while the boys stand as a four seed. Both teams will face Veterans in the first round of the region tournament.

The boys squad has a good chance to advance to the second round as they defeated Veterans twice in the regular season. The girls split their two regular season matches against Veterans, winning the first 4-1 and narrowly dropping the second 2-3.

With a win on Monday, the Yellow Jackets will secure themselves a place in the state playoffs.
