Yellowjackets Sophie Thatcher on what scared her about The Boogeyman

Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher has spoken about her role in upcoming horror film The Boogeyman.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Thatcher discussed her "complicated" character Sadie and explained that it was the film's terrifying script which initially drew her to the project.

"The script was devastating. Sadie is just a really complicated complex character. And she has such an incredible arc," she said. "As an actor, that is immediately what drew me in. I feel like it translated really well to screen, you could feel that in the script, you could feel the terror.

"It's rare that you feel that when reading a lot of scripts and a lot of genre stuff, but also just knowing that this is Stephen King, and there's that trust within that."

Adapted from Stephen King’s 1973 novel, The Boogeyman tells the story of a family haunted by a terrifying entity.

The first cut of the film was apparently so scary that it had to be re-edited, however for Thatcher it wasn't the film's horror scenes which scared her but instead the reminder of high-school social pressures.

"People were like, 'what was the scariest part of the movie?'" she said.

"I was like, maybe filming that one scene when everybody comes over and she's trying to entertain everybody, because that's so real. I think high school is just as scary as the Boogeyman."

Despite needing re-edits to make it less terrifying, the film's first reviews have been overwhelmingly positive.

Amongst the film's fans is author Stephen King himself, something which Thatcher was happy to hear.

"That's what we needed. And I remember just kind of being scared throughout filming just hoping that we would get his validation. But that yeah, that feels like 'Okay, now we can go home and feel good about ourselves'," the actress added.

The Boogeyman will be released in cinemas on June 2.
