Young Boys vs Manchester United - LIVE!

Man United are looking to continue their early season momentum as they begin their Champions League campaign with a trip to Switzerland to take on Young Boys tonight.

The mood around the club is buoyant after a summer that saw Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and - of course - Crsitiano Ronaldo arrive at Old Trafford in a transfer window that has transformed expectations for the season ahead.

A serious Premier League title challenge is top of the agenda and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side sit top of the league, level on points with both Chelsea and Liverpool at the start of what already looks like being an epic race.

However, making a serious impression on Europe is also a key aim for a club who have not been beyond the quarter-finals of the competition since the end of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

You can follow all the action from tonight’s Group F opener LIVE with our blog below...

Full time Young Boys 2 - 1 Man United

After going a goal up courtesy of a Cristiano Ronaldo volley (his first touch of the match) on 13 minutes, United lost a man, lost the lead and finally lost the match.

Just after the half hour mark Aaron Wan-Bissaka was shown a straight red for a poorly timed lunge and that changed the complexion of the contest.

Young Boys took control but didn’t look like they’d hit the target if they kept shooting for a month.

That changed in the second half as Moumi Ngamaleu poked home the equaliser on 66 minutes from a low and bouncing cross.

Then, in calamitous fashion, Jesse Lingard’s weak back pass was snaffled by Theoson Siebatcheu who dinked David de Gea to hand the Swiss champions a famous and deserved win.

Enjoyed that. Hope you did too. Stick around for some more live blogging across the site.

GOAL! Siebatcheu with the winner

19:41 , Daniel Gallan

GOAL! Siebatcheu wins it!

Oh Jesse Lingard what have you done?!

It’s a terrible mistake from from the United midfielder who plays a back pass to De Gea that is no where near strong enough.

Theoson Siebatcheu latches on to it and dinks it over the onrushing ‘keeper.

It’s the final act of the game. Young Boys win it. They perhaps deserve it on the balance of play but every member of the United defence will be gutted after that immense resistance.

Credit to the Young Boys though.

Young Boys with a last roll of the dice

19:36 , Daniel Gallan

91 mins: In the first of five added minutes Cédric Zesiger and Wilfried Kanga are thrown on for Sandro Lauper and Meschak Elia. Worth a go.

Fred makes way, Martial on

19:33 , Daniel Gallan

90 mins: Fred cops a lot of grief from United fans but he put in an almighty shift tonight.

He’s run his race and the broody Anthony Martial is on.

That was closer

19:32 , Daniel Gallan

87 mins: Well, forget the previous post, that was a lot closer. Centre back Sandro Lauper lets rip from a long way out with a near perfect technique and forces De Gea to stretch a finger tip on the dive and nudge it over the bar.

It looked like it was going over but the ‘keeper couldn’t risk it.

Corner comes to nothing as the visitors continue to scrap for a point.

Ngamaleu snatches shot and United hold on

19:30 , Daniel Gallan

86 mins: What would this scoreline be if Young Boys had a bit more composure when shooting?

Hard to say, but their goalscorer Ngamaleu snatches at his first time half-volley and drags it well wide. If they don’t take all three points they’ll know why.

Double switch for Young Boys

19:27 , Daniel Gallan

81 mins: 19-year-old Young Boy Rieder is on for Martins who had an excellent night.

Right back Hefti makes way for the experienced Sulejmani with the No. 10 on his back.

Lindelof is down

19:25 , Daniel Gallan

80 mins: The Swede is holding his head. This doesn’t look like fake, and there’s no question that was a collision of heads, but he’ll be in no rush to get back up.

Scratch that. He’s up.

Quick corner almost catches United cold

19:20 , Daniel Gallan

76 mins: If the English side are to hold on here they’ll need to stay sharp. That was anything but as a quickly taken corner from the left is worked between two Young Boys and then whipped in to the near post. It’s safely navigated but no doubt a warning shot.

Pogba manages to win a free kick down the field inside Young Boys territory. Perhaps a chance for a snatch and grab?

Varane with vital header

19:18 , Daniel Gallan

74 mins: This is a siege!

Varane steers a cross away with his head but the ball comes right back his way. Another wild shot means United have a breather but there is so much time left in this game. Incredible what a man disadvantage means at this level.

Ronaldo and Fernandes off

19:16 , Daniel Gallan

72 mins: The two Portuguese blockbusters have been replaced by the comparative yeoman of Matic and Lingard. Neither can have any complaints. United are on the ropes here.

GOAL! Ngamaleu equalises

19:13 , Daniel Gallan

GOAL! Ngamaleu

United’s resistance is broken and no one can argue that wasn’t coming.

A low cross from the right is an inviting one and Ngamaleu gets ahead of Varane to poke it past De Gea who can’t get a hand to it.

The home crowd are buzzing and their Young Boys are responding.

Resolute from Maguire as De Gea booked for time wasting

19:08 , Daniel Gallan

64 mins: The United skipper has been immense. He’s won yet another challenger as he continues to repel these persistent attacks.

Oh, De Gea booked in all that for time wasting. Some way to go yet for those sorts of shenanigans.

Ronaldo in a different hemisphere to his mates

19:04 , Daniel Gallan

60 mins: It’s understandable given the red card but United need a bridge between their striker and the rest of the side. Ronaldo is bustling about but they’[re not finding him and he’s not holding the ball.

To be fair to him, the midfield of Fred, Pogba and Fernandes can’t put their foot on it.

Solid work from the defence though. Fascinatingly poised.

Young Boys keep hitting hopeful shots

19:01 , Daniel Gallan

57 mins: And another one sails wide. Not too sure what these Young Boys are playing at. The crowd is frothing, they’re dominating possession and their opponents are down to 10 men, five of which are defenders.

Take your time fellas! Unless of course you want United to win, in which case, keep hitting those hopeful shots!

Right call on the penalty

18:59 , Daniel Gallan

54 mins: Yup, replays show the goal scoring machine goes down a little easy there. He ran out of puff and perhaps felt a slight touch in the back, but it was never enough to warrant a free shot at goal from the spot.

Ronaldo goes down in the box....

18:58 , Daniel Gallan

53 mins: And.... nothing given from the ref.

A hoofed ball is collected by Ronaldo and he gallops towards the goal, makes his way inside the box and goes down under a challenge before he can shoot. Naturally he’s appealing for a penalty but the ref waves him away.

Martins gets a yellow

18:54 , Daniel Gallan

49 mins: The man who was cut down by Wan-Bissaka scythes Fernandes and gets himself booked.

We’re back as both sides shuffle things around

18:50 , Daniel Gallan

45 mins: Raphaël Varane is on to strenghten the defence and Donny van de Beek is off. The young Dutchman can count himself unlucky but he failed to impress it has to be said. United to a back three/five.

Young Boys have also make a change. American forward Jordan Siebatcheu is on for Vincent Sierro.

Half time Young Boys 0 - 1 Man United

18:36 , Daniel Gallan

Half time Young Boys 0 - 1 Man United

Ronaldo’s first touch of the match is the difference here. A beautiful pass from Fernandes with the outside of his boot found his international teammate free in the box. A side-footed volley crept under the ‘keeper and United were ahead.

They looked in complete control until Wan-Bissaka lunged with studs showing and made contact with Martins’ ankle and was rightly shown a straight red.

Young Boys found their groove after that and Fassnacht should have equalised with a volley from close range. But the home side still looked rushed with pot shots from distance their main method of attack.

Expect a more cagey affair in the second half with United primed to break and Young Boys bossing the ball.

Catch you soon.

Fassnacht booked

18:32 , Daniel Gallan

45 mins: Fassnacht gets a yellow for a late challenge on Shaw. A sense of frustration creeping in to Young Boys’ game perhaps.

United holding on

18:29 , Daniel Gallan

42 mins: That red card has rattled them. Half time can’t come soon enough as Young Boys dominating the ball.

Another speculative shot is easily gathered by De Gea but they’re not necessary. The home side can afford to be patient now.

Still 1-0, but should be 1-1

18:27 , Daniel Gallan

39 mins: How has Fassnacht missed that?

A deep cross from the left finds him in a huge amount of space and he nails the volley inches wide. It’s a tremendous effort but he should be scoring from there.

Sancho sacrificed

18:23 , Daniel Gallan

38 mins: Sancho has come off for Dalot following the red card.

RED CARD! Wan-Bissaka

18:23 , Daniel Gallan

36 mins: Straight red for Aaron Wan-Bissaka

It was looking so comfortable for United but then United’s right-back lunges forward and catches Christopher Martins on the ankle with his studs showing and there’s no other option for the referee but to send him packing.

A reshuffle needed here and a golden chance for the Swiss champions to bag something from this game.

Another Young Boys shot from distance

18:18 , Daniel Gallan

32 mins: A pattern is emerging with Young Boys shooting whenever a chance presents itself.

This one falls to Michel Aebischer who hits it on the run but he’s off balance and its miles off the target. United need to close these down though. Any one of them could fly in.

Van de Beek looking a little aimless

18:16 , Daniel Gallan

30 mins: Many wondered how the young Dutchman would cope as a deep lying midfielder. So far he’s struggling to exert control on the game despite seeing a lot of the ball. Still time though.

United free kick from range

18:13 , Daniel Gallan

26 mins: And Ronaldo has walked away leaving it to Fernandes and Fred. #narrative.

Never mind. It amounts to nothing.

De Gea keeps United ahead

18:12 , Daniel Gallan

25 mins: That’s a smart save from the United ‘keeper. It’s a low daisy cutter that came through a mess of bodies and the Spaniard puts a strong right arm out from Fassnacht’s shot.

A counterattack is immediately launched and Ronaldo shoots from inside the box but it’s straight at the ‘keeper and it stays 1-0 to the visitors.

Exciting passage of play that. Expect more goals before this is done.

Fred with a shot from distance

18:07 , Daniel Gallan

20 mins: Surrounded by superstars and household names, Fred wants to send a reminder that he can ball (despite what you think).

He shoots high and wide from outside the box. Worth a hit thought after Fernandes and Shaw keep the ball alive down the left.

GOAL! Ronaldo

18:02 , Daniel Gallan

13 mins: GOAL! Ronaldo with his first touch.

He doesn’t hit it cleanly, and it squeezes under the ‘keeper who’ll be disappointed he didn’t do more with the shot, but Cristiano Ronaldo is a goalscorer yet again.

He’s beautifully found by the outside of the Fernandes’ right boot who whips in a diagonal ball and picks out his national teammate inside the area.

Ronaldo - exactly where he needs to be - side-foots a first-time volley and puts United ahead.

Another flashes past United’s goal

17:59 , Daniel Gallan

12mins: Elia twists and turns on the left edge of the United box and gets to the byline and flashes one past the goal face but no one’s there.

Young Boys manning up

17:56 , Daniel Gallan

9mins: If anyone expected a United walkover (full disclosure, we did), nothing of the sort has materialised.

The home side is pressing with intent, hunting in pairs and looking to break quickly. They’ve managed to string a few passes too.

Even-steven so far.

Young Boys fire first shot

17:50 , Daniel Gallan

3mins: Jadon Sancho loses the ball in midfield which allows Meschak Elia the space to run up field but he drags his shot across David de Gea’s goal.

You ready?

17:44 , Daniel Gallan

What. An. Atmosphere!

The Champions League is back and the Swiss are putting on a show. Are you ready?

Words from Ole

17:35 , Daniel Gallan

This evening’s game will be contested on astroturf. Not that Ole is concerned: ““We had a good day, a professional day [on Saturday] but this is a new game. Coming from Norway, I’m used to the astroturf – the players have trained on it, I’ve got no complaints.”

The manager is also backing his young Dutchman, Donny van de Beek: “We know what he’s capable of, he’s been working really hard over the summer. He’s stronger, fitter and we’re looking forward to seeing him in action.”

Young Boys team news

17:23 , Daniel Gallan

4-2-3-1: Von Ballmoos (c); Hefti, Camara, Lauper, García; Sierro, Martins Pereira; Fassnacht, Aebischer, Ngamaleu; Elia.

Subs: Zbinden, Faivre, Zesiger, Spielmann, Kanga, Sulejmani, Jankewitz, Bürgy, Siebatcheu, Mambimbi, Maceiras, Rieder.

(Another) Ronaldo record

17:16 , Daniel Gallan

Got room for one more?

When he made his United 2.0 debut on Saturday, Ronaldo broke an obscure Premier League record once held by former Crystal Palace hard man Damien Finbarr Delaney for the longest gap between matches in the English top flight.

12 years 118 days passed between Ronaldo’s foray at Old Trafford and his last appearance for the club. Delaney played for Leicester in 2003 and for Palace 11 years 155 days later.

Donny no longer in the dark

16:52 , Daniel Gallan

By our count this is Donny van de Beek’s third Champions start for Manchester United having only played six matches for the Red Devils at the top tier of European club football.

Though no pushovers, Young Boys are perhaps the perfect opposition to reignite his career.

Ronaldo starts, Van de Beek gets opportunity

16:35 , Daniel Gallan

As expected Ronaldo starts and leads a string team with three changes from Saturday’s 4-1 win against Newcastle.

4-3-3: De Gea, Shaw, Maguire (c), Lindelof, Wan-Bissaka, Fred, Pogba, Fernandes, Sancho, Van de Beek, Ronaldo

Subs: Heaton, Kovar, Bailly, Dalot, Varane, Mata, Matic, Lingard, Elanga, Greenwood, Martial

Betting odds and tips

16:22 , Daniel Gallan

If you fancy placing a wager on the result, here’s what Betfair reckons (subject to change, of course):

- Young Boys to win: 13/2

- Draw: 4/1

- United to win: 2/5

Prediction - Malik sees this going one way

16:19 , Daniel Gallan

“It feels like United are a team with serious momentum and such is the quality in Solskjaer’s squad that even if the Norwegian sees this as a chance to rotate slightly, they should still have too much for the Swiss outfit.”

Young Boys 0-3 Man United

Some injury concerns for Solskjaer

16:18 , Daniel Gallan

Scott McTominay is still absent after groin surgery but Fred is likely to return in midfield after sitting out Saturday’s win over Newcastle.

Edinson Cavani also missed that match with a knock and has not travelled to Switzerland, although the striker has a chance of featuring against West Ham on Sunday.

Where to watch

Find yourself a TV with BT Sport 2 in time for the 5.45pm BST kick-off.

Failing that BT Sport subscribers will be able to watch the match online via the website or BT Sport app.

Fond memories for United

16:14 , Daniel Gallan

This will be the third meeting between United and the Swiss champions. They clashed twice during the 2018/19. United were 3-0 winners at the Stadion Wankdorf in Berne on Matchday 1 with Paul Pogba bagging a brace and Anthony Martial providing the gloss.

It was a different story at Old Trafford on Matchday 5 however as a 91st minute strike from Marouane Fellaini stole all three points for Jose Mourinho’s team.

Ronaldo on the cusp of another record

15:59 , Daniel Gallan

At this point, Ronaldo is less man than he is mind boggling statistics. Should he play tonight (as if there’s any doubt) he’ll register 177 Champions League appearances which would bring him level with Iker Casillas as the most-capped player in the tournament’s history.

He’s already streets ahead of Xavi Hernández (151) who is the second most-capped outfielder.
