Paul Scholes was very impressed by one Manchester United star’s display against FC Sheriff and less complimentary about another’s.
United won 3-0 at Old Trafford with goals from Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Scholes lauded the performance of Alejandro Garnacho, who reminded him of a Ronaldo when he first arrived at Old Trafford.
“He was exceptional, he had real quality,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“The thing I liked about him: he was direct, he ran at defenders all the time. Tricks that had a bit of function, he had everything, it was just missing a goal or an assist.
“This club loves entertainers. He was like a young Cristiano, taking the ball down. I was impressed. Sometimes, wingers, sometimes they can’t go down that left hand side, but he could do both, and it makes you so unpredictable.
“I think his performance was exciting for an 18 year old kid but he was one to look for the future.”
Asked if Garnacho could soon become a regular uner Erik ten Hag, Scholes said it’s not out of the question.
“Difficult to say, he’s still very young, he played against opposition that isn’t the strongest,” Scholes added.
“He’s definitely an option for the manager, he’s one to think about. He could come on for the last 20-30 minutes and he could be more dangerous because he can go past people, either side.
“There are not many wingers who can do that these days. But when you come into the team you have to take your chances as a young player and I don’t think he did his case any harm.”
The United legend’s thoughts on Antony were less complimentary, as he labelled the £85m summer signing “a clown” after his pointless bit of “skill” before he was hooked at half-time.
Scholes said: “I’m not even sure it’s skill, is it? Could we [talking to Owen Hargreaves] do that?
“Is it his trademark? I think he needs a better one. He needs to find a more entertaining way.
“I don’t think this country likes to see that. Does any country, even Brazil? Brazil don’t want to see that, do they? Ajax, in Holland, do they want to see that?
“I like to see skill, but I just don’t think that is skill or entertainment. That is just being a clown, isn’t it?”
