It’s hard to believe Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw have never facedeach other, but the fact is they haven’t— untilFriday at 10:10 p.m. ET when Greinke's Diamondbacks face Kershaw's Dodgersat in L.A.
The two formed apotent 1-2 pitching rotation punchfrom 2013-15 with the Dodgers.
In that time, Greinke won 51 games, struck out 555 battersand finished in the Top 10 in Cy Young voting all three years.
Kershaw won 53 games, struck out 773 battersand won the NL Cy Young Award twice and finishing third in 2015.
This is a matchup that has needed to happen for years.
"I've been wanting to face him, just to see how nasty he is," Greinke said (via ESPN)."He does do everything as perfect as you would want your pitcher to do. Great mindset, great work ethic. I learned more about that than the actual pitching part of it. He's pretty special."
And what adds a little bit of fun to it as well is that the two are also two of the game's better hitting pitchers over the last decade.
Greinke has a Silver Slugger under his belt and has been a Top 10 hitting pitcher. Kershaw is no slouch himself as he is a career .176 hitter.
That might explain why Greinke is looking more forward to facing Kershaw at the plate while Kershaw …not so much.
"I don't really look forward to it," Kershaw told reporters. "You almost just try to block it out. It's not fun to pitch to people that you know. I'm not good at separating that. I think I'm just going to have to really focus and think about it like he's another guy, and then, the next day I can talk to him.”
Whether watching them face each other at the plate or on the mound, Friday night’s game is bound to be a fun one.
