Manchester United have been to watch Swedish starlet Williot Swedberg in action for Hammarby – a club co-owned by their former striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic – a report claims.

A new era is about to begin at Old Trafford ahead of the arrival of Erik ten Hag as manager. There will likely be several changes to the Manchester United playing squad. They will have to strengthen both for the present and the future.

With the long-term in sight, they have already been bolstering their youth ranks in recent years. Now, another teenage talent is on their radar in the shape of Swedberg.

That’s according to Sport Expressen in his native Sweden, who have revealed that scouts from both Manchester United and Barcelona were in attendance for Hammarby’s recent match against Malmo.

It ended as a 0-0 draw, so there was not too much to observe, but their presence shows their interest in the attacking midfielder.

Since the 2022 edition of the Allsvenskan began, Swedberg has scored five goals from six appearances. It has followed two goals from 19 games for the club in last year’s Swedish league, in which Hammarby came fifth.

With a contract until 2024, Hammarby will hope to keep developing him for a while. However, big clubs are now keeping tabs on him – and his current employers know it.

After the game between Hammarby and Malmo, sporting director Jesper Jansson told Expressen there is plenty of interest in the 18-year-old.

“There are certainly more (clubs in place) here,” he said, before referring to the “great interest” in him.

Bids already coming in for Swedberg

In fact, he also confirmed there are already “a few” bids. And some of those could appeal.

“Yes, absolutely,” he replied when asked if any offer was tempting. “That’s how it is. I think Williot feels quite calm.”

What’s more, Jansson did not deny that there could be movement in the summer.

“Absolutely,” he affirmed. “Something could happen, but we have no stress or need to sell. In a way, I think we can feel even greater peace.”

The Swedish source have also recently confirmed that PSV, Club Brugge and Augsburg have also watched Swedberg in the flesh in previous matches.

Ibrahimovic reflects on Man Utd past

Ibrahimovic acquired a 23.5% stake in Hammarby back in November 2019. Coincidentally, he has recently been speaking about his fond memories with Man Utd.

He represented the Red Devils between 2016 and 2018, before leaving for LA Galaxy. United won the Carabao Cup, Community Shield and Europa League while he was there.

And he has told ESPN: “I really enjoyed because when I came, everybody was against it. And then in England, they didn’t like me.

“All these haters, after three months, they started to like me, I didn’t like them anymore. I like people when they hate you because then they bring out the better of you. I had fun. [It] is a great competition, [an] amazing atmosphere.

“And I’m happy I played for United, which I think is the best team in England. And I think it was the right choice to go to Manchester United.”

Whether it would be the right choice for compatriot Swedberg to follow in his footsteps remains to be seen.
