Checking in: Unique Airbnb picks of the week

With the highly anticipated release of the trailer for season seven of “Game of Thrones,” it’s the perfect time to revisit one of our favourite themes for Checking in: castles.
In this week’s iteration, we highlight three new fortifications: a medieval castle in Italy, a luxurious chateau in France and a formerly abandoned castle in Scotland.

You can have a two-bedroom apartment in the Castrum of Serravalle, a medieval fortress in northeastern Italy, for $250 a night.
Staying behind its walls is a truly unique experience.

The spectacular fortification was built in 1550 for John Carswell, Rector of Kilmartin Glen and later Bishop of The Isles. It was held by the Campbell Clan and then abandoned for 200 years.
