The owner of Sale Sharks rugby club has struck a deal to seize control of clothing retailer Cotton Traders. Investment fund CorpAcq has snapped up a majority stake in the 30-year-old firm from founders, and former England rugby players, Fran Cotton and Steve Smith. The undisclosed swoop will help bankroll plans to bolster its online business, expand overseas and launch new clothing and homeware ranges. Nick Hamblin, the chief executive of Cotton Traders, said the shift in ownership comes during “a time of strong growth for the business”. The Daily Telegraph revealed last month that the firm’s founders were holding talks with CorpAcq over a potential deal. The move deepens the connections between the retailer’s founders and Sale Sharks as the two men already sit on the rugby union club’s board. The pair will also remain on the board of Cotton Traders as part of the deal with CorpAcq. Cotton Traders has weathered the bitter trading conditions on the high street, chalking up a 5.5pc rise in sales to £86.7m and a 5.2pc lift in operating profit to £8.1m for 2017. The Cheshire-based firm, which has 120 stores and employs around 950 staff, launched its first shop in 1998. High street giant Next bought a stake in the business in 1997, before selling out to the company’s founders in 2015. CorpAcq, which owns more than 14 firms spanning plumbing and heating to fork lift trucks, was launched by Simon Orange in 2006. Betfred co-founder Fred Done is a non-executive director of the so-called buy and build acquisition group.
