Inside Disney's New 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Ride, From Easter Eggs to Groot-y Goodness

With Star Wars Land still two years away, Disneyland is banking on another of its billion-dollar properties to draw visitors to the park over the coming months. Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout!, a Marvel-ized reboot of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride at Disney’s California Adventure designed by writer-director James Gunn, opened Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif. The attraction, which finds the Guardians trying to escape from the Collector’s universe-spanning museum of specimens and relics, is the anchor for the park’s Heroes of Summer initiative. Aside from the thrill ride, where visitors are lifted 30 stories high, then plunged into free fall, characters from the MCU will be stationed throughout for photo ops and meet-and-greets. Yahoo Movies attended the opening ceremonies for the Guardians ride; click through for the highlights of the gala event and a sneak peek inside Mission: Breakout!

Stan the Man

It wouldn’t be a Marvel attraction with the requisite Stan Lee cameo. That’s him caged at the bottom. (Photo: Marcus Errico/Yahoo Movies)

Guardians Trapped

Drax (Dave Bautista), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Baby Groot, and Rocket Raccoon are captured and added to the Collector’s menagerie, setting up the scenario for the Mission: Breakout! ride. (Photo: Disneyland Resort)

Movie Memorabilia

The Collector apparently has a thing for film props: His gallery includes cases filled with the artifacts of the Kree (center; an orb and a blade similar to the weapon wielded by Ronan the Accuser in the first Guardians) and Chitauri (right; the energy gun used against Earth’s Mightiest in the first Avengers). Dark Elf Artifacts

The Book of Yggdrasil (featuring Malekith’s quest for the Aehter), mask, and blade were all introduced in Thor: The Dark World. In the first Guardians, a Dark Elf was one of the notable specimens in the Collector’s collection. (Photo: Disneyland Resort)

Cosmo

The sentient Soviet canine cosmonaut was a key member of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics and has made cameos in both films. He’s among the most treasured exhibits in the Collector’s museum. (Photo: Disneyland Resort)

The Collector vs. The Gamemaster

Taneleer’s brother, known as the Grandmaster (played by Jeff Goldblum in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok), has a predilection for high-stakes contests — and hates to lose, as this portait dramatizes. (Photo: Marcus Errico/Yahoo Movies)

The Inner Sanctum

Terran guests are permitted a rare glimpse inside the private office of the Collector. Keen-eyed visitors will spot many a hidden Easter egg among the artificats. (Photo: Disneyland Resort)

Animatronic Rocket to the Rescue

Sony Walkman

When he captured the Guardians, Tivan added Peter Quill’s vintage Walkman (upper right shelf) to the collection of relics in his private study. Fortunately for Star-Lord (and Mission: Breakout!’s soundtrack), Rocket makes sure not to leave the music player behind. (Photo: Marcus Errico/Yahoo Movies)

Map to Neverland

Tucked into Tivan’s shelves is a Disney surprise: the map of Neverland complete with images of Peter Pan and Tinker Bell. (Photo: Marcus Errico/Yahoo Movies)

Yeti
