'Knightfall' star Tom Cullen takes us behind the scenes, into the muck

In History’s Knightfall, Tom Cullen stars as Templar Knight Landry, a man who’s put through the emotional and physical wringer as he searches for the Holy Grail in Paris in 1306. As we learned when Cullen took over Yahoo Entertainment’s Instagram leading up to the Dec. 6 premiere, filming the drama was also a test — whether he was losing a bet that required him to spend the day in his “Welsh underpants,” or losing four toenails in the freezing mud.

Knightfall airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on History.

Let’s Do This

It’s #Knightfall premiere day! I’m taking over @yahooentertainment’s Instagram to celebrate. Follow along for choice behind-the-scenes shots. Nudity warning! ⚔️ @knightfallshow #Knightfall #HISTORY — @tom_cullen

It Takes a Village

Our amazing @knightfallshow sets being built. It took 400 people, 7 days a week for 4 months to build these. They built multiple streets, a Palace, Temple, market square, Church, city walls (complete with moat), shops and taverns. The stone was so real you could only make out that it wasn’t by touching it. When all the extras were on set it was like being in a time machine. — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

Pro Tip

Never lose a bet. For @knightfallshow we trained for nearly three weeks in boot camp. We would box in the morning, then do circuit training, sword fighting, horse riding and then hit the gym. It was an intense process but we all bonded through sweat and pain. This day I bet Bobby Schofield (Parsifal) that Wales would beat England in the football game…Wales lost and I had to spend the day in my Welsh underpants. I think I worked it…maybe not… — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

First Look

Makeup and Hair tests take a long time to get right. This is from the first test of a younger version of my @knightfallshow character, Landry. A little on the orange side… — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

The Right Stuff

I love this picture. It’s from the first camera test for @knightfallshow. It is such a special moment. After weeks of preparation and training it’s the moment that you really start to see the character appear. We had tried lots of different looks for Landry and it wasn’t quite clicking but when I saw this picture my heart was racing and I knew we had found him. Amazing feeling. — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

Hot Mess

A brief break during our first day filming @knightfallshow. Our costumes weighed a staggering 50lbs and it was a BOILING hot day in Dubrovnik. We had been fighting for 8 hours straight and were utterly exhausted. At this point I had no idea how we were going to get through the 7 months shooting. You can see how bloodshot my eyes are from the endless sweat pouring into them! — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

All For One

The Knights. From left: Simon Merrells (Tancrede), Padraic Delaney (Gawain), some hairy bloke and Sam Hazeldine (Godfrey). One of the greatest parts of this job was getting to work with these amazing guys. We bonded like brothers. Their performances in @knightfallshow are astounding. I can’t wait for you to see them. I bloody love them. — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

The Royal Family

The Royals. Some of my favorite parts of @knightfallshow are the storylines that surround these three beauts. The political interplay and intrigue in the French Court has me so hooked. This day the assistant director had forgotten to call me in so I arrived late. By the time I got to set these three (Ed Stoppard, Sabrina Bartlett and Olivia Ross) had all lost their minds with the giggles and wouldn’t let me forget that I was late. They still remind me… — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

Game of Thrones

King Landry? Season 6…maybe…the crown suits me though, no? — @tom_cullen @knightfallshow #Knightfall #HISTORY

Judgment Day

Jim Carter and Bob Pugh. Two of the finest actors and gentlemen you’ll ever meet. It was an honor to get to work with these two again. We were shooting this @knightfallshow scene about an hour and a half outside of Prague, so we had to travel in every day. Jim would always share a car with me. Every morning I’d play my music until one day Jim asked me to switch it off, describing my taste in music like “Three Frenchmen pissing in a bucket.” I’ve never laughed so hard. He emailed me last week asking if my taste had improved…it hasn’t. — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

My View

The Templars. You can make out the camera on a crane. This was a very cool shot. It is very nerve-wracking having to give a speech to a room full of Knights…intimidating. — @tom_cullen #knightfall #HISTORY

Man’s Real Best Friend

Me and my horse, Zat. This guy has a longer CV than the entire @knightfallshow cast combined. I formed a tight bond with this amazing guy. My Grandfather was a horseman before he contracted Polio and couldn’t ride anymore. Riding with Zat made me feel close to my Grandfather. Thank you Zat. — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

Three’s Company

A cold sunny day on our @knightfallshow sets with the awesome Akin Gazi and Nasser Memarazia. I love these guys. Nasser is the real hero of the show and turns in an amazing performance. This was the third time I’d worked with Akin, every time he blows me away. He has a very, very cool storyline. A pleasure to work and become friends with these two amazing gentlemen. — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

Seeing Double

Me and my @knightfallshow stunt double and friend, Faycal. I did all my own fighting and most of my stunts but despite that Faycal was on set with me every day. Teaching me, improving me and encouraging me. When this photograph was taken I was in the middle of working 21 days consecutively. There were times when my energy was totally gone but he would pick me up and cheer me up. What a guy. Thank you bro! — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

The Thick Of It

From boiling sun to freezing mud. We shot a battle scene for Episode 110 of @knightfallshow that is the most incredible thing I’ve ever been a part of. If I never work again I’ll be happy. It was -10 degrees and the mud just got worse and worse. I lost 4 toenails from the cold alone! Too much information? — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

Together We Stand

The Templars ready for battle. We had roughly 250 stunt men fighting every day to bring this awesome @knightfallshow battle to life. They were unbelievable. — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY

Bathroom Break

Winter Warriors

Knights in Snow. The freezing temperatures were tough to work in but these guys never complained. The intense hard work and craft that goes into making a show is always worth it, but on @knightfallshow it was very special. I have never worked so hard to bring something to screen before but I was only able to give what I gave when I was surrounded by the fearless nature of our amazing crew. This is my chance to thank them, so, THANK YOU!!! You’re all animals!!! — @tom_cullen #Knightfall #HISTORY
