Wind power on steroids: Typhoon turbines to provide the ultimate clean energy to Japan by 2020

In what could be the ultimate clean energy, Japan is set to start harnessing the energy of typhoons, with wind turbines that are able to withstand intense storms – and turn them into power. Typhoon turbines, also known as the Magnus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT), were first thought up by Atsushi Shimizu, chief executive of Challenergy Inc. After seeing the widespread destruction caused by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, he wanted to find a way to provide a safe and sustainable source of energy. A spokesman for the company told IBTimes UK: "In Japan, there is a lot of potential in wind energy, but the energy composition of wind source is surprisingly low due to typhoons potentially breaking conventional wind turbines. • The best ski-in/ski-out resorts

      The best ski-in/ski-out resorts

What could be better than stepping out of a ski chalet or hotel and sliding off down the mountain, returning right to the door at the end of the day? No need to walk a long way wearing heavy boots while carrying skis or board, or chivvy everyone onto a crowded bus. While many ski resorts have some slope-side places to stay, it’s usually those that are purpose-built high in the mountains for easy access to the snow that can truly be considered ski-in/ski-out. The ones that were made tended to be triumphalist narratives, telling the stories of great sporting heroes and their triumphs in very bland and predictable fashion. If you wanted to see a single movie last year that told you about the realities of racism in America, the perils of celebrity culture, wife battering, the flaws in the US legal system, the betrayal of the American dream and of how even the most inspirational figures sometimes have feet of clay, you would turn to Ezra Edelman’s ESPN-backed O.J.: Made In America. • Doping sample re-tests from Sochi Olympics to run to 2022 - IOC

Doping sample re-tests from Sochi Olympics to run to 2022 - IOC

By Karolos Grohmann BERLIN (Reuters) - The re-testing of samples from the 2014 Sochi winter Olympics in Russia to identify any cheats who had competed there will last another five years to 2022, the International Olympic Committee said. The IOC is re-testing thousands of samples from the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 summer Games as well as the Vancouver 2010 and Sochi winter Olympics to root out any doping offenders. More than 100 have so far seen their sample test positive from Beijing and London alone, with dozens of medals having been stripped so far. More »
