Paul Lambert is leaving Stoke by mutual consent as the club prepare for next season in the Championship. Lambert’s four-month reign is over after he was summoned for talks with vice-chairman John Coates on Friday morning. Stoke want to pursue a new direction following Premier League relegation and have opted to end his tenure, with the club triggering a clause in his contract that enables them to part company with minimal compensation. Lambert replaced Mark Hughes in January and though he improved performances and Stoke’s defensive record, he won just two games out of 15, also drawing seven. The former Aston Villa and Wolves manager’s reign suffered due to the poor behaviour of players including Saido Berahino, Jese Rodriguez and Ibrahim Afellay, who were all excluded from his first-team squad. Defeat against Crystal Palace confirmed Stoke's relegation Credit: Reuters And it can be revealed that Lambert was still battling against ill-discipline the day before the final game of the season at Swansea, when one player turned up for training late. But Stoke are now searching for only their fourth manager in 12 years after both parties agreed to part company. Stoke's statement read: "The club would like to thank Paul for his work over the past four months and wish him well for the future. Whilst he was unable to guide us to Premier League safety after being appointed in January, it certainly wasn’t due to a lack of effort, professionalism and dedication on his part. "Paul would like to thank the Board, players and staff for the opportunity and their support. He would also like to thank the fans for their unwavering support. Whilst looking forward to his next challenge, he would like to wish the club every success next season. "The club will appoint a replacement as soon as possible in order to give the new manager time to prepare for the challenge of the 2018/19 season in the Championship." Premier League club-by-club review David Moyes, who departed West Ham on Wednesday, is admired by the Stoke board and has worked with the club’s chief executive, Tony Scholes, at Preston North End. There is also likely to be support for ex-Everton manager Sam Allardyce, though persuading him or Moyes to work in the Championship will be a big ask. Gary Rowett, the Derby manager, was high on Stoke’s list of targets earlier this year when they sacked Hughes and could come into contention again. Stoke are facing a summer of huge changes, with a number of players including Jack Butland, Xherdan Shaqiri, Joe Allen and Badou Ndiaye likely to leave. Yet Stoke are determined to retain a squad capable of promotion and have insisted they will be spending big in the second tier to bring in new signings.

Graham Alexander admitted he has taken a “left-field” move and “a leap of faith” after the former Scunthorpe United and Fleetwood Town boss was appointed as manager of Salford City, the non-league club owned by Manchester United’s “Class of 92”. The former Scotland defender, who was sacked by League One side Scunthorpe in March, has agreed a four-year contract with Salford, who parted company with joint managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley last week after three promotions in four seasons. Alexander, 46, who in 2011 became only the second outfield player in English football history to make 1000 professional career appearances, will be tasked with trying to get the Vanarama National League newcomers into the Football League at the first attempt next season after agreeing to drop two divisions. “I have just left a job at the top end of League One, but sometimes you have to take a leap of faith,” Alexander said. “It’s an exciting challenge. A bit left field – it may have caught some by surprise but I’ve always had an open mind about my career and life.” Salford are co-owned by Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, who formed the bedrock of Sir Alex Ferguson’s treble winners at United, and billionaire Singapore businessman Peter Lim. Welcome to The Peninsula Stadium, Graham Alexander and Chris Lucketti!#WelcomeGraham pic.twitter.com/Pz2hYO1MTP— Salford City FC (@SalfordCityFC) May 14, 2018 Alexander admits he initially screened a call from Chris Casper, another member of United’s 1992 Youth Cup-winning side who serves as Salford’s director of footballer, after failing to recognise the number and had little expectation of taking the job before meeting with the club. “I got a call from a number I didn’t know so I let it ring,” Alexander said. “It was Chris Casper. I called back and he wanted to meet and talk about football. It wasn’t something I saw taking forward but I thought it was polite to hear them out. I spoke to Chris and Gary and I was impressed, not just by what they want to do but what they’ve already done.” Alexander sees similarities between the rise of Fleetwood, who won six promotions in 10 years to reach League One, and Salford’s surge up the football pyramid to within touching distance of the Football League. “It’s extremely similar,” said Alexander, who managed Fleetwood between 2012 and 2015 and spent the majority of his playing career at Preston North End. “I know Gary and Chris have spoken to Fleetwood a lot about their journey. I came into Fleetwood when they had just been promoted to the Football League and found a club with a lot of ambition and drive but that was behind in terms of infrastructure. It was a brilliant job for me. I think what we did there will have played a part in Salford coming to speak to me.” The sad, slow death of Hartlepool United Alexander said he was intrigued by the prospect of having Neville as a boss and would have no problem exchanging 5am emails with the Sky Sports pundit, who is a notoriously early riser. “I think Gary said himself he’s a difficult man to work for. I don’t see that,” he said. “I think having that ambition and drive and a clear thought process about what’s next is good. It takes away the grey areas. I know what’s expected of me coming here. “Every time I’ve spoken to Gary over the past week it’s been like a machine gun of information. That’s great, you have to take it all in. “Don’t worry about that [the 5am emails]. Listen, I was getting up at 5am when I was going over to Scunthorpe. It’s not a problem for me. In this job, we work on very little sleep anyway. It’s 24/7 so that won’t be any different. Hopefully he’ll get used to my 4am emails to him.” Neville expressed his delight with the appointment. “Graham has got a level of resilience, character and personality to have played over 1,000 games,” he said. “He had a promotion with Fleetwood, Scunthorpe were fifth when he left, he knows the North West, he ticked an awful lot of boxes.”

Nigel Clough hopes Burton Albion have not timed their impressive dash for Championship safety too late. Goals from Hope Akpan and Luke Akins booked a convincing victory over Bolton Wanderers, who themselves sunk deeper into the relegation mire. Burton – who have the lowest wage budget in the second tier - have been in the bottom three since Boxing Day, and remain so on goal difference, but their pragmatic manager knows his team may still require favours on the last weekend as they travel to Preston North End. “For a team which hadn’t won in six months at one point, that wasn’t bad,” smiled Clough. “But we know we have still got a lot of work to do, and that we can’t afford to lose next week. We lose at Preston, we are down, so we go to Preston with the same sort of attitude. “It would have been nice to be out of the bottom three. But of course you only have to be out of it on the final day. Jon Flanagan and Lucas Akins battle for the ball Credit: GETTY IMAGES “The lads have got a great spirit and they are up for it. We knew what we had to do after the Hull game; win three and draw one minimum. We have got three and now we are going to try and win the game next week.” Bolton have endured a miserable time away from home this season, winning just one of their 23 games since returning to the Championship. It is little wonder with the weak defending produced in the first half as the Brewers secured a two-goal lead before half time. Hope Akpan finished off an intricate move to score his first Brewers goal on 28 minutes and it was not long before more dithering by Derik Osede and Mark Beevers allowed Lucas Akins to stab in the second just before half time. Fighting broke out among travelling supporters, a small group even trying to confront Bolton boss Phil Parkinson before stewards blocked their path. Such passion, however misguided, was in short supply among the Bolton players. Burton’s determination to hold on to their Championship status was only let down by their finishing. Liam Boyce, Marvin Sordell and Akins all spurned opportunities to make the margin of victory more extravagant. Bolton, who drop to second-bottom, now require a win against Nottingham Forest next weekend and hope other clubs around the bottom three drop points. “I can’t do anything else but apologise for that performance to our supporters,” said Parkinson. “I can understand their anger. I share it. We simply were not good enough and Burton were better than us all over the pitch. “Believe me, no-one is hurting more than me and my staff at this moment in time. “Once we had gone two goals down there was nothing to suggest we could get back into the game and that is bitterly, bitterly disappointing. “All we can do is pick ourselves up and try to get something from the game next weekend and hope it is enough.”

By Graham Banks The victory may have been ugly and tinged with good fortune but Gary Rowett could not have cared less at Deepdale yesterday. After eight winless games, Rowett’s Derby arrested their slump thanks to Tom Lawrence’s free-kick and a missed Preston penalty, leaving them strongly placed to clinch a play-off place. “It didn’t matter how we won, how ugly the performance was,” said Rowett. “I couldn’t give a monkey’s if we didn’t play attractive football. We tried to play attractive on Friday and lost to the bottom team. It’s a massive boost and hopefully gives the players a bit of breathing space to play with more composure.” That shocking Sunderland reverse had left Derby with little margin for error over the season’s concluding games and, when Andre Wisdom was judged to have pushed over Alan Browne after 36 minutes, Rowett admitted he feared the worst. But Browne himself, having been kept waiting by Derby keeper Scott Carson, struck the left-hand post and the ball flew wide. Credit: ACTION IMAGES Preston’s frustrations mounted when Tom Barkhuizen was judged to have fouled former Preston forward David Nugent on 53 minutes, handing Lawrence a free-kick 25 yards from goal. Derby’s first, and only, on-target shot took a slight deflection off the wall but should still have been dealt with by Chris Maxwell who could only touch it into the corner of his net. In the celebrations that followed, Lawrence broke the nose of team-mate Nugent with a stray elbow but the Derby striker insisted: ‘‘I’ll probably have two black eyes tomorrow but it’s worth it for the three points.” “If you look at the performance, we passed the ball well and had 19 shots but at this stage of the season all that matters is results,” said Preston manager Alex Neil. Team lineups Preston (4-2-3-1) Maxwell; Fisher, Huntington, Davies, Cunningham; Pearson, Gallagher; Barkhuizen (Bodin 73), Browne (Moult 63), Robinson (Johnson 79); Maguire. Subs Rudd, Clarke, Harrop, Earl. Booked Pearson. Derby (4-2-3-1) Carson; Wisdom, Pearce, Davies, Baird; Huddlestone, Ledley; Weimann, Vydra (Palmer 73), Lawrence (Hanson 88); Nugent. Subs Roos, Forsyth, Keogh, Jerome, Thomas. Booked Nugent. Referee T Harrington (Cleveland).

Sunderland have suspended midfielder Darron Gibson after he was charged with drink driving following a multi-car crash on a pedestrian street in the city. Pictures emerged over the weekend of damage to several cars, including the former Manchester United and Everton player’s own £75,000 Mercedes, as well as shots of Gibson speaking to police officers. Sunderland, who are bottom of the Championship and facing a second successive relegation after dropping out of the top flight last year, decided to order the player to stay away from the training ground because of the seriousness of the offence. Gibson is currently injured and would not have played in the Black Cats’ 2-0 home defeat to Preston North End, even if he had not been arrested just three hours before kick-off. The club said in a statement on Sunday morning: “Sunderland AFC has suspended Darron Gibson with immediate effect, after the player was charged with driving with excess alcohol on Saturday 17 March. The football club has commenced a full investigation into the matter. Sunderland’s chief executive, Martin Bain added: “We expect the highest standard of behaviour from our players and should any individual fall short of those standards then robust action must be taken." Gibson was taken away by police after his luxury 4×4 clipped a Nissan Note as he drove down a quiet street in the city. He then collided with other parked cars, including a white Seat Ibiza, which was propelled 40 feet down the road by the force. Police were called to Dovedale Road, Sunderland, shortly before noon on Saturday and Gibson was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. Gibson in action for Sunderland earlier this season Credit: Getty images In September 2015, the Republic of Ireland international admitted drink driving after he crashed his £125,000 Nissan Skyline GT-R Nismo into three cyclists at a petrol station close to his home in Bowdon, Cheshire. He was banned from driving for 20 months and handed 200 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order, along with fines totalling £5,700. It is also not the first time the midfielder has got himself into trouble at Sunderland. In July last year, he was filmed in a bar following a 5-0 defeat to Celtic telling supporters Sunderland were “f------ s---”. He also accused some team-mates of not giving “a f---” about the club before threatening to punch one fan.
