Sevilla players use coach Eduardo Berizzo's cancer diagnosis as inspiration for fightback against Liverpool

Sevilla have confirmed manager Eduardo Berizzo has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Spanish media reported on Wednesday the coach had informed his players of the condition at half-time during the 3-3 Champions League draw with Liverpool. At the time, Sevilla were trailing 3-0. However, Sevilla have since confirmed that Berizzo's players were told the news a few days ago. Nevertheless, Berizzo’s half-time address to his side must have been one of the most emotional of any coach, and will go some way to explaining the vast difference in application from the side in both halves of an extraordinary game. A club statement confirmed reports of Berizzo’s illness. “The medical services of Sevilla FC report that the coach of the first team, Eduardo Berizzo, has been diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the prostate,” read a Sevilla statement. Eduardo Berizzo told players at half-time of his cancer diagnosis Credit: AFP “The future examinations will allow to decide which are the steps to follow regarding their treatment. “Sevilla FC wants to show their maximum support to their coach at this time and wishes him a speedy recovery.” Argentine Berizzo is one of the Europe’s most respected coaches having previously managed Celta Vigo, where he was also a player. He led Celta to the Europa League semi-final prior to moving to Sevilla. Berizzo’s revelation adds a solemn perspective to the second half in Spain on Tuesday night, after which Liverpool have been roundly criticised for failing to prevent the stirring comeback. Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega said the players were determined to react to the half-time deficit for their coach, as well as their boisterous support who created a cauldron as their side fought back. Liverpool were pegged back from 3-0 down “It was a crazy game. We went into the changing rooms knowing that if we tried then we could pull it off. That’s how we have to play every game,” said Banega. “We have to go out there with that attitude, for the fans that always back us and for the coach who has turned this around. He is the most important of all of us, he has us on the right path and we are with him to the hilt.” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, said his players do not have a mentality problem despite their capitulation. "Yes it was not perfect but it's not a general problem. It just happened," said Klopp. "Could we have done better? One hundred per cent. Do I think it's a mentality problem? One hundred per cent not. "We opened the door for them, didn't close it, so they could score in the last minute. That's the story of the game."
