While the highlight of the Star Wars: The Last Jedi presentation at the D23 Expo was undoubtedly the behind-the-scenes footage showing new aliens and some tender moments among the cast members, the segment also included a selection of on-set photographs by writer-director Rian Johnson that candidly captured the ensemble. We’ve collected the best of those shots, along with a few others from the session, and present them here.

Grooming Chewie

Even a Wookiee needs hair and makeup, as this image attests. On stage are Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), John Boyega (Finn), Daisy Ridley (Rey), director Rian Johnson, Kelly Marie Tran (Rose), Laura Dern (Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo), and Benicio Del Toro (D.J.). Man of Mystery

While we get our first official look at Benicio Del Toro here, not much else was revealed about his character, only known so far as “D.J.” (Disney/Image Group LA)

Mark Hamill

The last cast member to take the stage, Hamill was praised by director Rian Johnson, who said this is the actor’s greatest performance yet as Luke Skywalker. (Disney/Image Group LA)
