'The Village': A decade in one Russian small town

“The Village” is a series Nadia Sablin has been photographing for the last decade. It centers on the town where she spent many summers documenting the lives of her elderly aunts. She has developed relationships with several of the local families, returning repeatedly to hear their stories and photograph them in their daily lives. She has seen the town change over the years — old wooden houses sinking into the earth replaced by apartment blocks built by migrant laborers. Russia’s economic and political changes have a direct effect on the villagers, forcing them to adopt new realities, develop survival techniques and depend on one another in profound ways.

This series is geographically specific, but the issues Nadia addresses are universal — what it’s like to grow up in a time of ideological upheaval, how state propaganda skews an individual’s perception of reality, and how women become self-sufficient as their husbands are claimed by faraway jobs, illness, and alcoholism. (Nadia Sablin)

The Village” will have a one night only screening and talk by Nadia Sablin, moderated by photographer Annie Ling, at the Half King in New York City on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at 7:00 p.m.
