Brazil’s economic crisis could push as many as 3.6 million people below the poverty line by the end of the year, according to a World Bank study on the impact of recession on Brazilians’ incomes.

Brazil’s worst economic downturn intensified unexpectedly in the final quarter of 2016, frustrating hopes for signs of a recovery.

According to the World Bank, the “new poor” will come mostly from urban areas, while rural poverty increases will be smaller because financial vulnerability is already higher in those areas.
