  1. 6-7 - A missed dropped shot at 4-4 gives Nadal the chance to serve out for the match leading 5-4. He played a wonderful lob the point before. Melzer misses with an attempted forehand winner, but Melzer recovers superbly. Nadal then thumps a forehand winner to bring up his third match point. Melzer empties a shot into the net and it is all over. Nadal wins 8-6 in the tiebreak. He will face Robin Soderling in the final. Another magnificent effort by Nadal.

  2. 6-6 - Nadal ends the Melzer winning run. We go to 6-6 and we are into a tiebreak in this third set.

  3. 6-5 - This has been a stunning run of games by Melzer. From 5-3 down, he is 6-5 ahead. Couple of booming shots with that forehand. Pressure on Nadal as he tries to force the tiebreak.

  4. 5-5 - A break back by Melzer! Amazing stuff. He has really displayed some fortitude in this match.

  5. 4-5 - Two straight aces by Melzer. Quality stuff, but looks like we are approaching the death throes of this semi-final. Nadal to serve for a spot in the final.

  6. 3-5 - Another love game by Nadal! Having little trouble holding serve here. One game from the final here.

  7. 3-4 - Melzer pumps a fist at the end of that game, despite remaining a break down. Difficult to see how he will change the direction of this match, but he will keep fighting.

  8. 2-4 - Another predictable service game by Nadal. He is winning all the key rallies and that first service is holding up well too.

  9. 2-3 - Melzer continues to perform positively here. Difficult when you are up against possibly the best player to have played the game on clay.

  10. 1-3 - A fourth love service game by Nadal. He is moving closer to the final. Three games away now.

  11. 1-2 - Melzer holds serve. Must keep fighting, even if this is looking like a forlorn hope.

  12. 0-2 - We've been going for 1hr and 19 minutes and Nadal moves two games ahead in the second set. Melzer needs to find something special really quickly. To be fair to the Austrian, he has played as well today as in his win over Novak Djokovic in the last eight. Nadal is a different kettle of fish.

  13. 0-1 - Some stunning footwork by Nadal. The court coverage is fabulous. He breaks in this opening game.

  14. 3-6 - A rally of 27 strokes in that game. He wins that point before going on to collect the set without dropping a point on his service game. Looking destined for a rematch with Robin Soderling in Sunday's final.

  15. 3-5 - Melzer does the necessary in that game to hold serve. Nadal will serve for the second set.

  16. 2-5 - Nadal moves to within one game of the second set. He continues to enjoy a high percentage of first serves. He is getting 78% in and winning 71% of those points. Melzer will serve to stay alive in this set.

  17. 2-4 - An hour on court and Nadal breaks again. He really is a class act. As soon as he suffers a break, he displays some more of his vast reserves of expertise.

  18. 2-3 - Brilliant response by Melzer! Couple of booming forehands and a fabulous little touch over the net to win that game. A bit of loose play by Nadal, but full marks to the Austrian. We are back on serve here.

  19. 1-3 - There is the break in the third set! Nadal a set and a break up! Looking very good for the final. Melzer tried to slug it out with him on that final point, but Nadal has too much power.

  21. 1-2 - Melzer pushed Nadal to deuce on his own serve, but the four-time Roland Garros champion survives it. Melzer is giving of his best here, but is still struggling to impact upon Nadal. Frustrating times for the Austrian.

  22. 1-1 - A fine response by Melzer in the game, but Nadal refuses to go away. He recovers from trailing 0-40 to reach break point, but Melzer somehow survives. That was a terrific hold.

  23. 0-1 - Nadal is getting 87% of his first serves in here. He is playing like a robot. Have to feel a bit sorry for Melzer out there. Nadal takes the first game.

  24. 2-6 - Melzer played a fine first set, but Nadal thrashes a winner across court to break for the second time. He wins the set. We've only been going for around half an hour, but Nadal has wrapped up the set.

  25. 2-5 - Another couple of excellent shots by Mezler in that game forcing errors from the racket of Rafa. Brings up a break point, but a big serve allows Nadal to force to deuce. Nadal finds some more of his magic to hold serve wtih an ace. This is Nadal at his very best.

  26. 2-4 - Nadal breaks! A couple of thumping forehands prove too strong for Melzer. Nothing much the Austrian player can do about that.

  27. 2-3 - Games on serve. Melzer doing really well here. Performing to a high level in this semi-final. Nadal holds again.

  28. 2-2 - A stunning pass by Melzer on the run. Nadal can only look on helplessly. We are level at 2-2.

  29. 1-2 - Games continue on serve. Nadal holds serve with some comfort in the third game of the opening set.

  30. 1-1 - Excellent start by Melzer. A drop shot in that game as the Austrian holds to love.

  31. 0-1 - A solid start by Nadal. Looking in good condition. Holds serve in the opening game.

  32. - Nadal will serve in this opening game.

  33. - The players are out on court warming up. Can Melzer cause Nadal any problems on clay? Difficult to see how he can defeat the Spanish player in this semi-final, but sport teaches you to never write off the underdog.
