  1. - - Federer on court after that match: "It was really difficult, he played extraordinary tennis. I reached his level of play a bit later in my career. I didn't know him so well but I do now, and a bit more when we hug in a minute! Hopefully he won't be too shy afterwards, I speak some French (he says while speaking fluently in French) so we can chat. He has a lot of potential and can become a great player."

  2. - - Goffin on court after this match: "I have photos of Roger all over my room! I'm really happy to have played here, and played a good match on Suzanne Lenglen and I hope to play a lot more matches like that."

  3. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 6-2 6-4 – MATCH FEDERER! Federer is serving for the match but Goffin races 30-0 up! But overexcited at a rally he was controlling, he spoons one wide with Fed on the run. Fed then levels with a sweeping forehand. Now match point, which Federer takes with a lovely outswinging forehand into the right corner. Next is the winner of Berdych-Del Potro, which is on later weather permitting. Men's draw.

  4. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 6-2 5-4 – Goffin is serving to stay in the match and is level at 15-15 with Federer going wide for 30-15. Fed bosses the next rally and, if he’s going to break the Belgian, Fed will have to work for it. A superb rally now that Goffin bosses with some angled slices and drives, and game point as Fed nets, taken with a good serve.

  5. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 6-2 5-3 – The crowd gets excited as Goffin hits a winner but Federer moves ahead to silence them, only for the kid to drift a super backhand winner beyond Fed and on to the line. 30-30. Fed struggles to get a serve in, finally doing so and meeting a great return with a fizzing backhand down the line.

  6. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 6-2 4-3 – Federer has another break point but he slices an ambitious backhand wide. A fine hold in the end as Goffin drifts it beyond Fed, who can’t keep his backhand in.

  7. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 6-2 4-2 - A comfortable hold for Federer, sealed with yet another drop shot over the net that Goffin once more almost makes but not quite.

  8. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 6-2 3-2 – A thrilling rally ends with Fed dinking a drop shot over the net after pushing Goffin to the back of the court with a smash. Lovely stuff from the Swiss to make it 15-15. The two exchange unforced errors for 30-30. At deuce, Federer queries a line call before Goffin wins the next point with a lovely drop shot and overhead volley. Goffin holds.

  9. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 6-2 3-1 – At 30-0 down, Goffin produces a gorgeous little drop shot that draws Federer into the net and the Swiss sends his angled shot out. Goffin then pumps a forehand down the line to make it 40-30 and takes the game to deuce. Goffin brings up break point but a big ace and an overhead smash put Fed back in control and he holds with an inside-out forehand.

  10. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 6-2 2-1 – Goffin is getting properly bullied on his serve now and, from advantage, he is now a break point down but saves it after a thrilling rally on the baseline. Fed can’t return the serve and he’d love a Hawkeye right now, except there is none. So he responds with a cool forehand crosscourter and it’s deuce. Finally the kid holds to stop the rot.

  11. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 6-2 2-0 – BREAK! Goffin is dead on his feet now as Fed toys with him for an immediate break, which he follows with a love hold completed by a stunning drop shot that.

  12. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 5-2 – SET! Fed races 40-0 up as Goffin now can’t keep with him at all. And that is the third set, Federer leading two sets to one.

  13. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 5-2 – BREAK! This next Goffin service game is at deuce but then the Belgian hits long. But Fed doesn’t take the break point as he kicks his forehand winner wide. Fed has another break point but great variety in the running groundstrokes from Goffin and eventually Fed hits long. But a savage return down the line gives Fed break point again. Weak backhand return to net though. This game is a stayer... Advantage Fed again though, which he takes to let him serve for the set.

  14. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 4-2 – Fed holds to 15 with a cute drop that Goffin almost makes but just stumbles short of.

  15. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 3-2 - Goffin gets his pecker up and manages to hold fairly easily. Whatever happens he has done his career the world of good with this performance.

  16. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 3-1 – Fed holds in double time as he seeks to take this game by the scruff of its neck. Goffin needs to find some motivation, his head is dropping.

  17. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 2-1 – BREAK! Two break points for Fed as, after a series of Goffin errors, the GOAT glides a fine winner with his opened backhand. And after pulling one back Goffin double-faults the break away. A muted response from the crowd.

  18. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 1-1 – Fed holds to love in no time at all. I can see him pulling away at some point in this set.

  19. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 0-1 - Goffin starts the third set with a fine hold under pressure. He gets the cheers even though Fed is a crowd favourite.

  20. - - FEDERER 5-7 7-5 – SET! That is a dreamy drop-shot from Federer, but he follows with a weak backhand to net. Two game points but another poor backhand and it’s 40-30. And another mistake from Fed brings up deuce! And a brilliant flying winner down the line by Goffin. A fine serve though brings it back to deuce. And now set point as Fed crushes a cool winner clear of the Belgian, who pumps a forehand long as Fed levels on sets.

  21. - - FEDERER 5-7 6-5 – BREAK! Goffin double faults to 15-30. Not a great time to do so. But a superb first serve can only be returned long by a sprawling Fed. But a weak forehand to net means it’s break point Federer! And Goffin goes long with a drive and he’s been broken! Federer serving for the second set!

  22. - - FEDERER 5-7 5-5 – Fed serving to stay in the second set. A great point from both men, sweeping backhands from both sides of the court, super mobility from Goffin who clips it beyond Fed. His next return is out though, but another superb strike from range puts the Belgian ahead. He tries a backhand winner but drives it to net, disappointing as Fed was prone. Fed then holds as he gives Goffin the runaround.

  23. - - FEDERER 5-7 4-5 – The Paris fans have warmed to Goffin but Fed fights back to 30-30. No break points this set yet. Goffin now has game point but deuce as he fails to make his forehand from wide. First serve is long, and the second is good, Fed only able to net the return. Advantage Goffin, which he takes as Fed hits one long.

  25. - - FEDERER 5-7 4-4 - Goffin twice skews backhands long and Fed holds with ease again.

  26. - FEDERER 5-7 3-4 - Goffin is very tricky on serve as he has power and accuracy and an uncanny reading of returns coupled with great mobility. He holds to 15 again.

  27. - - FEDERER 5-7 3-3 - Fed cruises 40-0 up and holds with a serve that bounces up to head height, Goffin only able to net.

  28. - - FEDERER 5-7 2-3 - Federer races 30-0 up before putting one wide, says the line judge. He challenges but they look at the chalk and see it wide. Dodgy. And a kosher point for Goffin as he powers a forehand drive wide of Fed. A cool volley at the net gives him game point, but Fed crushes a return down the line for deuce. Goffin finally holds off deuce as Fed pumps one long.

  29. - - FEDERER 5-7 2-2 - Stylish love hold from Federer. Gliding better in this second set but he's still behind.

  30. - - FEDERER 5-7 1-2 - Goffin now holds to love as he makes a case for a surge into the top100. He looks a quality player.

  31. - - FEDERER 5-7 1-1 - Goffin, meanwhile, holds to 15 as Fed stoops into the net. Classy this kid is. But Fed's class is eternal and he pulls out a love hold with a cute backhand.

  32. - - FEDERER 5-7 - SET GOFFIN!! Hello - Goffin goes 30-15 up against serve with a quite brilliant array of groundstrokes from deep, Fed eventually off target. But two break points now as Goffin shows great power with his forehand - the first is saved by the Fed serve... and the second is by his follow-up, which catches Goffin on the back foot. Deuce. Goffin has now lost five break points. But another break point as Fed gets his angles wrong - AND TAKEN WITH A WICKED PASS DOWN THE LINE!

  33. - - FEDERER 5-6 - Goffin's turn to crank it up on serve and he holds to 15 as Fed needlessly volleys one wide when it was going out!

  34. - - FEDERER 5-5 - Hold to love for Le Fed who is looking with some concern at this youngster.

  35. - - FEDERER 4-5 - At 30-30 as Goffin pings in a sweet serve, Fed netting as a result of his change in position. A lovely pass by Goffin for game point, double-handed on the move to net... and he holds with a brilliant serve out wide that Fed meets but can't keep on court.

  36. - FEDERER 4-4 - Great hands by Goffin to meet the sliced disguised half-volley at the net, but it drops an inch long. Federer should hold but a messy approach shot hits the net. 40-30 and from there Fed holds.

  37. - - FEDERER 3-4 - Goffin holds with a lot less trouble as he shows some powerful serving for a relatively little man. I say relative because, at 5'11, he's above average height - but not in tennis terms.

  38. - - FEDERER 3-3 - Epic game this as Goffin has lost three break points, but Fed uses all his experience to stretch the point, Goffin unable to keep a forehand in. But then another wild backhand and it's deuce once more. Some good retrieving from the Belgian but Fed smashes one away, but what a shot from Goffin, a dipping long-range effort that bounces off the line. He spoils it with an error, very long, and Fed eventually holds with a trademark open pass.

  39. - - FEDERER 2-3 - What a rally and what a winner from Goffin, flying around at the net to flick it off the line! And another, this time Fed netting, and the little Belgian is 30-15 up! And a double-break point now, but the first is saved as he overhits a return. First serve is wide... the second is good and Fed levels with a passing drive. Game point Fed with a cool volley but he nets off second serve. Deuce again. Fed willdy bakchands wide and break point! A third! Saved by Fed's serve.

  40. - - FEDERER 2-3 - Speaking of breaks, there aren't many over at this end. None in fact as, after an easy service game for Fed, Goffin holds to 15 to keep it with serve. Nice crosscourt drive to finish it off.

  41. - - FEDERER 1-2 - The next two games go comfortably with serve. Mr Goffin looks at home at this level.

  42. - - FEDERER 0-1 - Goffin holds to 15 as Federer nets from a brief rally. That will boost his confidence.

  43. - - World number two Roger Federer is up against little David Goffin next, a young Belgian who has never played the GOAT. He has only played seven tour matches.

  5. Finally Federer wins. Like Djokovic, the big question is unforced errors against far less ranked players. Now we don't know if either is ready to play Nadal who seems to be playing like a highly tuned and motivated machine.

  6. Let's hope Federer can remain focused and keep his mind from wondering.

  7. Appears Federer is trying to coast on his single break. He's been burned before by doing this. Hopefully not here.

  14. Goffin giving Roger a huge fright he was so close to dropping the 2nd set also! Ran out of steam somewhat in the third and seems all over now in hte 4th but Roger has had to wake up he was sluggish footwork was off big time so many errors and even more shanking than usual. Goffin looks a magnificent prospect though can't believe I've never heard of him before this week! Great touch magnificent backhand and the timing on his shots is reminiscent of Roger in his prime! Fearless for almost the first 2 sets. Hope he goes on to become a stellar player.

What is the explanation of calling Roger Federer a goat? I would have thought it was very derogatory, in which case I suggest whoever is calling him a goat looks in the mirror!!!! S
