  1. - - So, last year Ekaterina Makarova put out Serena Williams on her way to the quarter-finals where she lost to eventual runner-up Maria Sharapova. And this year, she has put out fifth seed Angelique Kerber on her way to the quarter-finals where she could well face ... yep, you guessed it ... Maria Sharapova. The world number two faces Kirsten Flipkens later on today

  2. - - KERBER 5-7 4-6 - GAME, SET & MATCH! Not such nerves for Makarova in this set as she quickly serves out the match to love, sealing her win with an ace straight down the centre of the court.

  3. - - KERBER 5-7 4-5 - BREAK! Kerber is left pretty furious with herself as she slaps an attempted down the line forehand into the net to concede her serve at the first atttempt in this set. Makarova will have a chance to serve out this match after the change of ends - although remember what happened when she tried to serve out the opening set

  4. - - KERBER 5-7 4-4 - A poor service game from Makarova leaves Kerber with two break points. A fantastic rally from both players as Kerber flings herself around the net with some great defensive volleying before Makarova eventually finds a good enough passing shot that the German can only hit into the net. An ace from the Russian saves the second and then she holds on to hold with another ace

  5. - - KERBER 5-7 4-3 - Despite putting a forehand volley right into the wheelhouse of Makarova (and being duly punished by a forehand passing shot winner from the Russian), Kerber holds for the loss of just the one point without too much trouble

  6. - - KERBER 5-7 3-3 - Kerber went off for a full medical timeout for treatment to her lower back but it doesn't seem to have affected Makarova too much - the Russian slapping down a double fault followed by an ace to seal a win to 15

  7. - - KERBER 5-7 3-2 - Kerber has called for the trainer but she doesn't appear to be in too much trouble as she gets down low to a backhand and riffles an angled backhand winner across court to seal a hold to 15 to sneak in front once again

  8. - - KERBER 5-7 2-2 - An absolutely stunning cross court forehand on the run from Kerber, which Makarova can again only frame back into the net, followed by what should be a regulation forehand up at the net but which the Russian sends wide puts pressure on the Makarova serve. Again she goes for the serve out wide and again Kerber crushes her forehand return down the line for a winner. The pushes Makarova to deuce but eventually she comes through the hold, a backhand winner down the line sealing it

  9. - - KERBER 5-7 2-1 - Kerber is looking more business-like in this second set as she steps up the court to a shorter, defensive ball from Makarova and drills her double handed backhand down the line only to be returned into the net from the Russian

  10. - - KERBER 5-7 1-1 - Makarova also opens up with a hold to 15, sending Kerber stretching as she hits the centre line with a first serve. Unsurprisingly, the German cannot control her return and the ball ends up in the net

  11. - - KERBER 5-7 1-0 - Kerber races through a much more confident looking hold to 15 to open the second set, Makarova sending her off-balance backhand return whistling long of the baseline after a pretty decent serve from the German

  12. - - KERBER 5-7 - SET! Kerber puts the pressure on with another forehand return of serve rattled down the line after a serve out wide from Makarova - that one really isn't working for her today. The Russian holds her nerve to earn herself another set point from 30-30, however, and this time she takes it, getting Kerber on the defensive before sending a backhand winner down the line off a shorter ball.

  13. - - KERBER 5-6 - BREAK! After all that hard work to get back in this set, Kerber has given up her serve once again, working her way into the net only to put her, admittedly low, backhand approach shot into the bottom of the net. Makarova's third chance to serve out this set will come after the change of ends

  14. - - KERBER 5-5 - BREAK! Makarova starts more solidly this time, even earning herself a set point. But she sends a forehand sailing long of the baseline to squander it before promptly conceding her second once again when Kerber finds a forehand winner. Kerber has got things back on serve in this opening set

  15. - - KERBER 4-5 - Kerber continues her comeback with a solid enough service hold to 30, a backhand down the line doing the trick as a scrambling Makarova can only get the frame of her racquet the ball. The Russian still has one chance left to serve out the set, which she will attempt to do after the change of ends

  16. - - KERBER 3-5 - BREAK! The German climbs all over a short second serve from Makarova and rattles her forehand return down the line for a winner. It brings up two break back points for Kerber, but she only needs the one as Makarova slaps down a double fault. The German will still have to serve to stay in the set though

  17. - - KERBER 2-5 - BREAK! A huge forehand down the line from Makarova puts Kerber on the back foot and she earns herself another break point from there. Kerber saves it with a forehand winner of her own but quickly hands the Russian a second chance and then also a third, both with forehands into the net. A double fault on the third sees Kerber finally concede her serve and Makarova will serve for the set next, with the double break insurance

  18. - - KERBER 2-4 - Makarova saves a first break point with an angled cross court forehand winner off a shorter ball from Kerber and also a second with some huge hitting from the baseline, eventually drawing a defensive forehand well long and wide across court. And Makarova goes on to hold with a couple of big first serves, neither of which Kerber can return in play

  19. - - KERBER 2-3 - Better from Kerber as posts a love service hold of her own to stop the rot. A great second serve into the body of Makarova is send spinning wide by the Russian as she struggles to get out of the way and make space for her forehand return

  20. - - KERBER 1-3 - Kerber really has yet to find her range on her groundstrokes as another forehand sails well long of the baseline to help Makarova complete a love hold that cements the early break

  21. - - KERBER 1-2 - BREAK! Makarova has clearly decided that coming into the net is a good game plan against Kerber as she again employs the strategy on the first of her break points. This time it is a very solid backhand volley that does the trick for the Russian and she secures the early break

  22. - - KERBER 1-1 - Makarova makes a trip into the net forces Kerber to come up with a tough passing shot, something the German cannot manage as she sends the ball long, and that's a love service hold for the Russian

  23. - - KERBER 1-0 - A quick and easy opening service hold from Kerber as she eases through for the loss of just a couple of points when Makarova sends the ball into the net off a probing, deep backhand from the German

  24. - - We are just about ready to get going on Rod Laver Arena with Ekaterina Makarova having won the toss and opted to receive, instead putting Angelique Kerber in to serve first
