  1. - - So Federer completes the semi-final. He will face Frenchman Benoit Paire in the second of the semi-finals tomorrow night while fifth seed Rafael Nadal will take on Tomas Berdych in the first match in the afternoon.

  2. - - FEDERER 6-4 7-6(2) - GAME, SET & MATCH! A solid victory from Federer in the end as he quickly sets up four match points after the change-of-ends, only needing the one when he finds a forehand winner down the line!

  3. - - FEDERER 6-4 6-6(4-2) - TIE-BREAK! Janowicz is left clutching at his right elbow after another brutally powerful serve but he stands up to Federer up at the net to get one point back before the change of ends, eventually finding the dinked backhand volley winner after a series of passing shot attempts from Fed.

  4. - - FEDERER 6-4 6-6 - Janowicz completely crumples early in the game, slapping a tame forehand into the net before looping a forehand long to hand Federer two match points. The Pole saves the first with his fifth ace before another big serve can only be netted in return by Federer. Back to deuce. A forehand across court that Fed cannot deal with and the a forehand passing shot long by Fed and Janowicz holds to force the tie-break.

  5. - - FEDERER 6-4 6-5 - Federer holds to 30 with a huge ace right down the centre of the court. Just moments after serving for the set, Janowicz will have to serve to stay in the match after the change of ends.

  6. - - FEDERER 6-4 5-5 - BREAK! Finally Federer does break back, pushing Janowicz deep behind the baseline with a big forehand before slicing a forehand drop shot over the net and then easily putting his backhand volley across into the open court for the winner. Was that Janowicz's big chance gone?

  7. - - FEDERER 6-4 4-5 - Janowicz saves it with a absolutely massive forehand winner drilled across court before going back to the same point and this point and this time going wide to hand Fed another chance. Again the Pole saves it, this time with an ace, but again he slaps down a double fault to hand Fed a break back point...

  8. - - FEDERER 6-4 4-5 - A defensive forehand from Janowicz drops long of the baseline to hand Fed a small window of chance at 150-30. A great big serve from the Pole sees him level at 30-30 when Fed can only slice his backhand return wide. Janowicz wastes a first set point with a poor attempt at a sliced forehand drop shot, which he puts into the net. And a double fault hand Fed a break point...

  9. - - FEDERER 6-4 4-5 - Federer holds despite squandering his first game point with an inside-out forehand winner well wide across court. But he gets it at the second attempt with a forehand approach shot winner and Janowicz will have to hold his nerve if he is to serve out this second set.

  10. - - FEDERER 6-4 3-5 - Boom! Janowicz finally finds his second ace of the night to bring up three more game points and, although the next serve isn't quite an ace, it might as well be. There was no play that was coming back in play from Federer. Fed will now have to serve to stay in this second set.

  11. - - FEDERER 6-4 3-4 - Ace number nine from Federer sees him take a 30-0 lead before another two back-to-back service winners help him also post a love service hold.

  12. - - FEDERER 6-4 2-4 - Janowicz is showing no signs of nerves in leading this second set as he holds to love, with a second serve winner (not quite an ace as Federer gets a racquet frame to the ball)

  13. - - FEDERER 6-4 2-3 - Federer produces his eighth ace of the evening before smacking a forehand winner down the line to hold. There was no way that one was coming back!

  14. - - FEDERER 6-4 1-3 - Janowicz makes a trip up to the net, guesses the right direction of Fed's attempted passign shot and pushes his backhand volley down the line for a passing shot winner. From there the Pole goes on to hold and maintain his advantage in this set.

  15. - - FEDERER 6-4 1-2 - Much better from Federer on serve as he holds without any of the drama that characterised his last game.

  16. - - FEDERER 6-4 0-2 - Janowicz holds from a spot of pressure at 30-30 with another huge serve to consolidate the break. The Pole has only managed one ace so far in the match despite the speed and power with which he has been serving. Which says so much about Federer's return ability.

  17. - - FEDERER 6-4 0-1 - BREAK! A great response from Janowicz after dropping that first set as he breaks with a sublime backhand lob to get this second set off to the perfect start.

  18. - - Federer hit seven aces in that opening set which, apparently, makes him the fifth ATP player to ever rack up 8000 career aces. An impressive stat for anyone, let alone for someone who is more about finesse.

  19. - - FEDERER 6-4 - SET! Janowicz hits into the net to hand Federer a first set point. And sure enough he takes his first chance of the match to break, hitting first into the body of the Pole up at the net and then second finding a passing shot forehand winner down the line.

  20. - - FEDERER 5-4 - The first real test coming up for Janowicz after the change-of-ends. He will have to serve to stay in this opening set after Fed holds to love once again with four quick-fire first serves.

  21. - - FEDERER 4-4 - This set is looking increasingly like it will end in a tie-break as Janowicz batters down another couple of huge service winners to go 30-0 up before going on to hold with a forehand winner.

  22. - - FEDERER 4-3 - Still no breaks of serve as Federer holds once again with ease, no more break points in sight for Janowicz.

  23. - - FEDERER 3-3 - Another huge serve from Janowicz, 232kph this time, sees him hold once again to stick with Federer, without as yet facing a break point

  24. - - FEDERER 3-2 - Federer races through his service hold this time, not having too much trouble in putting the pressure back on Janowicz at the other end of the net.

  25. - - FEDERER 2-2 - Fed sends a forehand return of serving long of the baseline to help Janowicz set up a couple of game and although the first is wasted by the Pole, he holds at the second attempt with a forehand down the line that Fed can only pull wide across court.

  26. - - FEDERER 2-1 - Janowicz pushes Federer back behind the baseline with some more of his huge hitting, drawing the forehand error from the second seed and earning himself a break point in the process. Federer saves it with an ace before Janowicz sends a forehand sailing long of the baseline. A stunning backhand drop shot winner from the Pole denies Fed a game point but he earns himself another chance and this time does hold with an ace.

  27. - - FEDERER 1-1 - HUGE serves from Janowicz - the first at 229kph and the second at 233kph - help him on his way to a hold, a vicious forehand in the end sealing the game when Federer fails to deal with the injection of pace and instead sends his forehand reply long.

  28. - - FEDERER 1-0 - Federer opens with an ace before an off-forehand catches the top of the net and bounces wide. But that's the only point Janowicz gets as Federer finds another ace and then a deep enough forehand that the Pole can only net in response.

  29. - - Federer won the toss and opted to serve first so it will be the second seed to get the clash underway...

  30. - - In the other half of the draw, world number one Novak Djokovic crashed out of the tournament, from a set and a break up, at the hands of sixth seed Tomas Berdych. Berdych will next face six-times former champion Rafael Nadal, after the fifth seed survived a second set onslaught from compatriot and fourth seed David Ferrer.

  31. - - Benoit Paire awaits the winner of this match, having thrashed Marcel Granollers 6-0 6-1 this morning in his very first Masters quarter-finals.

  32. - - These two have never met each other before so they will have nothing to really go on in the early stages of the clash. Except, of course, that everyone knows how Federer plays because he's, well, Federer. And Janowicz has been making waves this year both on and off the court so it will be impossible for Federer to have missed all of that!

  33. - - Hello and welcome to the last remaining Rome Masters quarter-final between second seed Roger Federer and unseeded Pole Jerzy Janowicz.

  1. As stated. Nadal was the King of Clay no matter what happen to the semis. He's just been great and consistent. Hope Federer will be in finals to see the 2 legend again for a long time. May the best man win!!!

  2. It is looking good for Fed! It is easier for him to reach the final than Rafa but both will make the final. I am looking forward to the battle of the two greatest players of all times. This is the best chance for Fed to beat Rafa. We will see if SAMantha will loudly celebrate or CRY in the desert.

  7. Roger is the Goat. And I wish to add - it was close, pretty close... JJ lacked experience and a brush-up tonight, however, showed no fear, nothing was faked, it was a pleasure to watch them play, wasn't it?

Tonight Roger played seemingly on purpose two shots directly into JJ's body whilst they were close to the net. In my opinion, it was far from being elegant and showed kind of tension in Roger's mind...

  13. Well...just as it of the best tennis players of all time vs one of the tallest players of all time, one of the falling tennis stars vs one of the rising tennis stars, one of the most reserved players of all time vs one of the most spontanious playrs of all time... simply ...the two tennis worlds apart ! The clash you shouldn't wouldn't and couldn't ...miss.

  14. Tough one, that Jerzy guy's got some talent and his confidence seems to be growing+ we know Fed's been struggling vs the tall guys of late ( Berdych/Delpo/Sod etc.. ) and some of the younger ones too. Previous match vs Simon tho was fantastic tbh, no signs of back problems, great movement... This should be a cracker :-)

From Coolworld, on Fri 17 May 19:50
  15. I would love to see Federer win out of respect. My head tells me that Janowicz will be the spoiler and ruin the chances of Rafa- Fed final- assuming that they can beat Berdych and Paire respectively which could prove difficult. Let the best man win

From Firoz, on Fri 17 May 19:16
  16. Well Roger isn't silly he knows what to expect. Go for it Roger you are the best
