The Three Lions boss has been nervously watching club football over the last few days, hoping that his plans will not be further disrupted by injury problems in the build-up to the tournament which begins on November 20.
Reece James is set to miss out after the Chelsea star picked up a knee injury, while Manchester City duo Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips have both been in a race to prove their fitness after undergoing surgery, with Ben Chilwell definitely out alongside club team-mate James.
There are also those on the fringes of the England squad who have been looking to make their case for a place on the plane with a strong run of performances over recent weeks, with the likes of Callum Wilson and Ivan Toney among the striker hopefuls.
Newcastle frontman Wilson is expected to be on the plane, along with the likes of Arsenal defender Ben White and Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford.
England face Iran first up in Group B, before matches against the USA and Wales as Southgate’s men look to progress through to the knockout stages in routine fashion. As was the case at Euro 2020, 26-man squads will be selected for the tournament after FIFA approved the change earlier this year.
When is England World Cup squad announced?
Southgate will name his final World Cup squad this afternoon at 2pm GMT, followed by a press conference at St George’s Park.
The England boss is still able to make changes after that, up until the final FIFA deadline of Sunday, November 13 when the squad must be submitted officially.
The Three Lions get their World Cup campaign underway eight days later when they face Iran on November 21.
