Troy Aikman thought Redskins 'put the dagger' in Saints, who came back to win

In fairness to Fox color commentator Troy Aikman, it really did seem like the New Orleans Saints were finished on Sunday.

When the Washington Redskins scored with 5:58 remaining in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass to a wide-open Jeremy Sprinkle, it gave Washington a 31-16 lead. Aikman thought it was over.

“They just put the dagger in New Orleans,” Aikman said.

Nope. The Saints stormed all the way back. Drew Brees threw a touchdown, the Saints forced a three-and-out, then Brees threw another touchdown to Alvin Kamara. Kamara scored on the two-point conversion to tie the game, and the Saints won it in overtime. It was one of the best games of the NFL season.

It’s not exactly a “Dewey Defeats Truman” moment for Aikman, but still a bit funny. It highlights how great the Saints’ comeback was. They had no business winning after falling behind by 15 with less than six minutes left. Brees played great down the stretch and they got it done. It was an amazing win for the Saints, who improved to 8-2 and are one of the best stories of this NFL season.

It wasn’t like anyone thought the Saints would win when Washington grabbed a 31-16 lead. Aikman just happened to say it on national television. Whoops.
