Man Jailed After Ramming Police Officer During Traffic Stop

A 24-year-old man has been jailed for four years after ramming a police officer with his car in London on July 1, 2022, the Metropolitan Police said.

Body-cam footage from the Metropolitan Police shows Inspector Tony McGovern speaking to Joseph Ward on Upton Road in north London.

The Met said McGovern “was suspicious of how the driver was behaving” and stopped the car.

McGovern can be heard in the body-cam footage asking Ward to pull over. Ward drives forward before stopping and reversing into McGovern and his motorcycle and driving off at speed.

Ward was arrested following a manhunt on July 20.

The Met said Ward received a four-year jail sentence. Ward had previously pleaded guilty to 14 offences, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, impersonating a police officer, dangerous driving, and failing to stop for police. Credit: Metropolitan Police via Storyful
