Starlin Castro went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and delivered a go-ahead, two-run single in the ninth to propel the Washington Nationals to a wild 13-12 comeback win over the host Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday afternoon. The Nationals erased three deficits overall, including five-run and four-run Phillies leads, on their way to their fourth consecutive victory. The Phillies lost their third in a row and sixth in their past eight games.
With top seed Ash Barty and defending champion Simona Halep both heading into Wimbledon without a single match on grass this season after recent injury concerns, the women's field is wide open. The French Open this month crowned a first-time women's major winner for the sixth straight year and it could well be Wimbledon's turn to witness a new Grand Slam champion on July 10 for the first time since France's Marion Bartoli lifted the Venus Rosewater Dish in 2013.
It may rain, umbrellas being as much a feature of the English summer as striped jackets and strawberries and cream, but the return of Wimbledon will put a spring in the step of tennis fans whatever the weather. It may not be 'normal service' just yet, the emphasis still more on social distancing than socialising, but play is at least being resumed with eager spectators set to attend in their thousands next week.
It is almost two years since Novak Djokovic left Roger Federer crestfallen by edging a momentous Wimbledon final but as the tournament prepares to return after last year's cancellation, the men's game remains in the Serb's stranglehold. Since that epic five-set victory, in which he saved two match points and won the first fifth-set tiebreak in a Wimbledon final, Djokovic has claimed three of the next six majors with Rafa Nadal bagging two and Dominic Thiem one. It would likely have been four for Djokovic had he not been defaulted from last year's U.S. Open -- allowing Thiem to sneak in and finally add a new name to the Grand Slam winners' club which has been ruled by Roger Federer, Djokovic and Nadal for over 15 years.
Valentin Prades may be recognised as one of the best modern pentathletes of his generation but for all his success the Frenchman is best remembered for throwing away the 2018 world championship, celebrating as he approached the finish line only to be beaten home by Britain's James Cooke. Prades has also been haunted by a fourth place finish at the Rio Olympics and the 28-year-old Frenchman heads to Tokyo eager to put a golden shine on his career.
The 32-year-old French heavyweight will be aiming for his third consecutive Olympic gold, matching a record held by Japanese great Tadahiro Nomura. Last year, Riner, a 10-time world champion and twice Olympic champion, lost for the first time in nearly a decade, ending his 154-match winning streak going back to 2010 after being defeated by Japan's Kokoro Kageura in the Paris Grand Slam. Bilodid claimed victory in the 2018 world championships at the age of 17, becoming the youngest judoka to win a world title, beating Ryoko Tamura's record set at the age of 18.
The top-ranked athlete in the male -68kg category will be bearing the weight of national pride for South Korea after leaving Rio and London with a bronze and silver, respectively. The father of a toddler at age 29, Lee has said he not only wants to win gold in Tokyo but also disprove the assumption he once held himself that parent-athletes tend to lose their grit.
Abdulrashid Sadulaev will headline Tokyo 2020 as a returning Olympic gold medallist, after bagging the gold at 86-kg in Rio. Now competing at 97-kg, his fiercest rival will be defending Olympic champion Kyle Snyder of the United States. Nicknamed the "Russian Tank," Sadulaev has won four World championships in the last six titles.
British sailor Mills went from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs at in Rio de Janeiro. With the Tokyo Games put back a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 32-year-old has delayed retiring form the sport to compete in the women's 470 class. At the age of 59, six-time Olympian Lange is returning to the Games to defend the Nacra 17 title he won in Rio with Cecilia Carranza.
The Brazilian's high-flying acrobatic approach has made him one of the most popular surfers on the circuit and he is the runaway leader at the top of the men's Championship Tour standings, over 8,000 points ahead of compatriot Italo Ferreira. The 28-year-old Hawaiian faces a race against time to be fit for Tokyo following an operation for an unspecified knee injury in May, but if he can make it he should be among the top draws as surfing makes its Olympic debut. Introduced to the sport by his mother as a baby, Florence was said to have been able to surf by himself at the age of five and he has gone on to become hugely successful in the professional ranks, winning back-to-back World Surfing League titles in 2016 and 2017.
Germany’s late equaliser in a 2-2 against Hungary in Munich secured them a last-16 tie at Wembley.
GOIANIA, Brazil (Reuters) -Peruvian-Italian striker Gianluca Lapadula inspired Peru to a second half revival as they fought back from a two-goal half time deficit to emerge with a 2-2 draw against Ecuador in the Copa America on Wednesday. With one game left for each, Ecuador have two points from three games and Peru have four. Ecuador is one of only two teams never to have won the Copa America and although they started the match in the Brazilian city of Goiania without their suspended striker Enner Valencia they took the game to Peru and were 2-0 up at half time.
The all-female W Series, which is supporting Formula One at eight grands prix this year, will become a team-based championship from 2022 as a result of strong sponsor interest, organisers said on Thursday. Drivers will continue to race with identical machinery, however, with cars prepared and maintained by W Series Engineering. The series, whose second season starts at Austria's Red Bull Ring this weekend and which has the ultimate aim of helping a woman race in Formula One for the first time since 1976, currently provides cars to the drivers individually.
Germany may have stumbled through Group F to finish in second place, following a nervy and wholly unconvincing 2-2 draw with Hungary, but the nation believes a knock-out round clash with England may be exactly what Jogi Löw’s side need to fix their troubles. The four-time World Cup winners spent much of their final group game a goal down to Hungary, before Chelsea forward Kai Havertz scored an equaliser shortly after the hour mark. However, Marco Rossi’s side equalised almost immediately after t

Braces from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo saw the sides finish 2-2 in their final group game.
Hungarians have spent over half a century wondering if they would ever have a national team to be proud of again but as their players stood in front of their supporters, singing the national anthem with tears running down their faces, it was clear that long wait was over. The record will show that Hungary finished bottom of Euro 2020 Group F without a win in their three games and were eliminated from the tournament. But another way of looking at Hungary's results is that, despite being written off as no-hopers in the toughest group, they held world champions and tournament favourites France and were six minutes away from qualifying with a victory in Germany -- until Leon Goretzka's late equaliser.
A late equaliser from Leon Goretzka sealed a 2-2 draw with Hungary and a place in the last 16 of Euro 2020.
The group stage finished with drama and goals aplenty in both Group E and F.
The Juventus forward has netted 109 times for his country.
