Ukrainian air defenses shot down 18 missiles fired by Russia overnight on May 16, the Kyiv city administration and air force said, calling the attack “exceptional in its density.”
The Ukrainian Air Force wrote on Tuesday morning that air defenses shot down Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles, and S-400 Iskander missiles fired from warplanes, ships in the Black Sea, and land. The attack began around 3:30 am local time, it said.
Debris fell in some districts of the capital, damaging vehicles and a non-residential building, said Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration (KMVA).
Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said some missile fragments fell on the city zoo. No animals or employees were injured, he said, and the zoo would be open as usual in the morning.
