Nelson Cruz is headed to a contender in the biggest deal yet ahead of the July 30 trade deadline. The defending AL champion Rays acquired Cruz, one of baseball’s most proven sluggers, in a four-player trade with Minnesota on Thursday night. Tampa Bay, in a tight race with Boston atop the AL East, received Cruz and minor leaguer Calvin Faucher from the struggling Twins (41-55) in exchange for minor league right-handers Joe Ryan and Drew Strotman.
Tyrone Taylor hit his first career grand slam during Milwaukee's six-run seventh inning, and the Brewers opened a three-game series against the visiting Chicago White Sox with a 7-1 victory on Friday night. Rowdy Tellez had two hits, two RBIs and reached base three times for Milwaukee, which snapped a five-game home losing streak. Andrew Vaughn had three hits, including a home run off Hunter Strickland in the eighth inning for Chicago's lone run.
Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa got ejected for the first time in a decade. Milwaukee’s Tyrone Taylor gave him even more reason to feel frustrated shortly afterward. Taylor hit a grand slam to cap the Brewers’ six-run outburst in the seventh inning of a 7-1 victory Friday night.
