Tyson Fury has announced that he is retiring from boxing, making the move in a short Instagram video weeks after a loss to Oleksandr Usyk - but Manchester Evening News readers in our comments section doubt that it's the last we've seen of this Fury brother.

'The Gypsy King' has had a successful career in professional boxing, retiring for the second time with a record of 34 wins from 37 fights. 24 of those were knockout victories.

The most notable marks against his record are two losses to Usyk in the past two years, the last coming in Saudi Arabia in December 2024 by unanimous decision. Fury's bout with Deontay Wilder in 2018 ended in a split draw, though he's had his revenge in two rematches since then.

In a video uploaded to his Instagram account, Fury, 36, said, "Hi everybody. I'm gonna make this short and sweet. I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing. It's been a blast. I've loved every single minute of it, and I'm gonna end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask."

Richard 'Dick' Turpin was a highwayman during the 18th century who infamously wore a mask to conceal his identity.

"God bless everybody," Fury signed off. "See you on the other side," before shouting: "Get up!"

Few believe that Fury's Instagram video spells the end to his boxing career. Reader Wiganman writes: “A very wise decision. But I doubt Tyson will stick to being retired.” Bernardmoaning says: “He'll make more comebacks than Elton John and will look equally stupid.”

Sportzbar writes: “He's 'retired'. Well gets him in the news I guess. I give it 18 months max before the rest of this charade plays out and he 'comes out of retirement'.”

Thedaytoday says: “Fair play to him. He has enough money to retire. Enjoy it while you’re young enough to do so.” Stockportred is less sypathetic: “He was found out by a real boxer, he was just blessed with a large build. Hope we don’t hear from him or his dad ever again.”

Promoter-in-chief Eddie Hearn thinks that Fury will return to fight Anthony Joshua. Commenter M30_zipcode agrees: “He’ll come out of retirement to fight AJ. No doubt it’s all a publicity stunt.” Bonesey says: “I’d like to see him fight Dubois, then maybe AJ.”

Johnwayne says: "Must be scared of Anthony Joshua hahaha." Hardboiledeggandnuts writes: "Looked like he'd already retired in his last fight."

Fury has already hinted at what his post-boxing career might be - he could make a surprise shift into medicine. In 2018, he told The Sun: "I had a choice and I chose boxing first but, after boxing, I am going to be a doctor. I made that decision a few years ago. I am going to be a doctor and I am going to help people.

"When I have finished in a few years, I'll still only be in my early 30s. Then I'll study for the next seven years to be a doctor. If I'm 40 and a qualified doctor, I'm still a young doctor. That is what I intend to do.

"I studied very hard at school but I turned to sport because that was my calling - and I've got to the highest level in that. Whatever I put my mind to, I do well. I think doctors and nurses do a fantastic job, they're underpaid and without them we'd be in a lot of trouble."
