20-goal ace signed, wonderkid returns - Dream Liverpool squad for Arne Slot with three transfers
Arne Slot will not inherit a bad situation at all when he takes over from Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool. Unless there is a late twist in the tale, the Feyenoord boss will become the Reds' head coach this summer.
While the last few weeks have not been at the level Liverpool would have wanted, there is no need for a complete overhaul. Anyone suggesting that wholesale alterations in the transfer market are required is being far more reactionary than the data-led Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will be.
There are some key areas of the team that need to be improved — at center-back and potentially in the attack — but the majority is well-stocked. Most of the players are at a good age to be able to further improve as well.

In most areas, stability is what is required. Having Alisson Becker and Caoimhín Kelleher as the goalkeepers, for instance, would be ideal. At center-back, aside from losing Joël Matip at the end of his contract, there is no need to be getting rid of anyone else.
At full-back, Joe Gomez has shown enough on both sides to suggest that he can continue to be a cover option there, with Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold the first-choice picks. There is an argument that Alexander-Arnold could move into midfield, but Conor Bradley is another right-back solution even if Slot was to go down that path.
In midfield, there is a good blend of options to continue playing the three-man system that Klopp has deployed. There is depth there on both sides with Ryan Gravenberch likely to kick on again and Harvey Elliott hopeful of getting more regular starts.
The only question would be Wataru Endō being older than is ideal. If there was a top-class number on the market, perhaps they could be acquired — but only if the right player was available. Alexis Mac Allister has proven adept there in the meantime.
Slot likes to have a lot of wide players because of the demands he places on those used in the attack down the flanks. There is an argument, therefore, for signing another player who can play there, easing the load on the likes of Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah. Leeds United's Crysencio Summerville, who has scored 20 times this season, has been linked with Liverpool this week, via Fabrizio Romano's Here We Go podcast.
Salah's long-term future, even if he is not expected to move on this summer, has to be factored into the equation given his age and contract situation, while there is a question mark over a number of Liverpool attackers in terms of their productivity levels or injury history. Getting one more player in to play in the forward line could help on both fronts.
Considering the expanded Champions League format next season will mean two more matches being played during the group phase, Liverpool needs to ensure it has enough squad depth to compete on that front as well as the Premier League. Additionally, there will be no easy games there — frankly, there was this year in the Europa League.
In a dream scenario, then, assuming that Slot loses Thiago and Matip at the end of their contracts — two players who have barely featured this season because of injuries — there could be three signings. A center-back is a must, another forward would seem logical, and then if the right midfielder came up on the market, Liverpool should pounce.
Beyond that, though, there are not likely to be loads of additions. The Reds will hope for better luck on the injury front next season, plus Slot will be able to call upon wonderkid midfielder Stefan Bajčetić, who has missed almost the entirety of this season through injury, and perhaps Fábio Carvalho, Tyler Morton, Kaide Gordon, Ben Doak and Bobby Clark.
