When is the 2025 Carabao Cup final? Liverpool eyes Wembley return to defend title
Liverpool could take an important step closer to qualifying for the Carabao Cup final on Wednesday night when it plays Tottenham Hotspur.
The sides meet over a two-legged semi-final in the next month, with the first match to be played on 8 January and the second over four weeks later on 6 February. Liverpool travels to London for the first match, with the reverse taking place at Anfield.
Arne Slot’s side enjoyed its last trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, when Liverpool came away with a 6-3 victory in the Premier League just before Christmas. A repeat would certainly help the Reds chances of making it to the first major final of the season and of Slot winning a first winner’s medal at Liverpool.

When is the Carabao Cup final?
The 2025 Carabao Cup final takes place on Sunday 16 March and will be played at Wembley Stadium. A kick-off time has yet to be confirmed.
What impact would that have on Liverpool’s fixture?
Liverpool is scheduled to play Aston Villa in the Premier League that weekend meaning, should the Reds secure a spot in the final, it would be moved to accommodate the fixture. That might pose a slight problem given the Merseyside derby was postponed last month and there is already an additional fixture for Liverpool to find in the calendar.
Who could Liverpool play in the final?
Should Liverpool overcome Spurs, it will face either Arsenal or Newcastle United in the final. The latter seems most likely given the Magpies won 2-0 at the Emirates on Tuesday night and Arsenal will need to achieve at least a two-goal victory at St James Park to win on aggregate.
Newcastle, who last won a major piece of silverware in 1955, made it to the 2023 Carabao Cup final but was beaten by Manchester United.
Liverpool’s League Cup record
The Reds are the most successful side in the competition's history, with 10 League Cup wins. Liverpool is also the reigning holder given Jurgen Klopp led the side to victory last season, as he also did in 2022.
Manchester City (8), Manchester United (6), Aston Villa (5) and Chelsea (5) are next on the list, while none of the three other semi-finals this season has won the trophy in 17 years. Spurs last won it in 2008 - one of four triumphs - while Arsenal’s most recent success came in 1993. As for Newcastle, they have never won the trophy in its 64-year history.
