2025 Royal Rumble: 6 burning questions after WWE's shocking WrestleMania 41 swerve
The 2025 WWE Royal Rumble is over — and what a night it was. An utterly stacked field, a suitably brutal ladder match, and an unexpected winner that managed to wrong-foot pretty much everyone. What more could you want?
With the two Rumble matches in the books, we now know the first pieces of the WrestleMania 41 puzzle. But Saturday's chaotic event also left us with plenty of new questions that need answering. Here are six of the biggest ones.
Can Jey really do it?
You have to give WWE's creatives some credit on this one: No one — literally no one — had Jey Uso as the potential winner. But can he really go all the way now and become world champion?
Just in case you had any doubt before last night, WWE clearly has a lot of faith in Uso. To invest this much in a babyface only to then have them stumble at WrestleMania would be a risky move, to say the least. Based on that, you'd expect to see Uso leaving Las Vegas in April with gold around his waist.
Then you remember who he will be facing. Gunther isn't just booked as one of the most dominant champions in history, he's also the man who came closest to beating Cody Rhodes in 2024. And he just enjoyed a decisive win over Uso in San Antonio.
Perhaps we'll see an angle where Uso acknowledges his underdog status before working to find that inner strength that will allow him to avenge that defeat — except that would be a carbon copy of what we had with Sami Zayn last year. Whatever happens, WWE's creatives have their work cut out with this swerve.
Will Cena bounce back?
Some of us guessed that having Cena win the Rumble would prove too easy an option for what's being sold as a year-long retirement tour. Indeed that turned out to be correct, with "Big Match John" forced to settle for the runner-up spot.
If you caught the post-show press conference, you heard Cena say he plans to compete in March's Elimination Chamber. Listening to his short monologue, it was clear that WWE intends the retirement run to be a longer story of triumph over adversity.
That means we can probably expect "Big Match John" to fall short again in Toronto. A 17th world title remains inevitable — that, I firmly believe — but there will be a few more hurdles before then.
Where was Jade Cargill?
I make no secret about being one of those who assumed that a Jade Cargill return was a near certainty at the Rumble. But in the end, the former tag-team champion was conspicuous with her absence.
Is all well between the WWE and Cargill? The whole backstage attack angle has taken a backseat in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Saturday's commentary referred to Bianca Belair and Naomi as tag-team champions, without any mention of the Cargill backstory. This is Uncrowned's 2024 Tag-Team of the Year we're talking about here.
Of course, not everything has to be shoehorned into the Rumble and perhaps we’ll see the storyline return on an upcoming episode of “WWE SmackDown” instead. But the longer this hiatus goes on, the stranger it begins to seem.
Which way will Sami turn?
Having Sami Zayn turn up during the Universal Championship match between Cody Rhodes and Zayn's longtime bestie Kevin Owens was always going to happen. But his appearance was much more understated than it might have been, leaving us guessing as to where his loyalties lie.
Will Zayn try to talk sense into his closest ally, acting as the peacemaker — or at least attempting to — as he did with The Bloodline? Or will he end up buying into the whole "Kevin is Right" crusade, and thus pitting himself against Rhodes? Right now, we can only guess.
Though we also have the fact that Karrion Kross has spent the past few weeks pouring poison into Zayn's ear — raising the possibility of Sami turning on his best friend ahead of WrestleMania.
Where next for Roman?
Ever since Roman Reigns declared victory over Solo Sikoa, there's been no shortage of wild speculation about who might prove to be his next big singles opponent. Saturday's Rumble dropped some tantalizing hints on that front, but stopped short of anything decisive.
Having Reigns clash with Seth Rollins was always going to be catnip for fantasy bookers, but we also had the much-anticipated staredowns with Drew McIntyre and Jacob Fatu as well. And let’s not overlook who eventually eliminated the former Universal Champion: A certain CM Punk.
Needless to say, any of those options would be pure box office at WrestleMania 41.
Jordynne Grace to NXT?
Smart fans had been fanning themselves in excitement at the news that “The Juggernaut” was officially heading to WWE. And it’s fair to say that her Rumble appearance did not disappoint, giving us the most impressive spot of the women's match.
Still, it's impossible to ignore that Grace’s eventual elimination came not at the hands of one of the main roster talents, but instead from the NXT champion Giulia. Could the former TNA Knockouts Champion therefore be on her way to the developmental brand?
Given Grace's experience, it would be a surprise. But it would at least open the possibility of a four-way encounter between Grace, Giulia, Stephanie Vaquer and Zaria — a match that would raise the bar yet again for the women’s division.
