As Neymar matures, Dennis Wise believes he will cut out the theatrics from his game.

Even though the Brazilian superstar scored one and set up the other in the 2-0 round of 16 victory over Mexico, his performance was overshadowed by his reaction to a Miguel Layun challenge.

The Mexican did tread on Neymar’s leg, but the contact was minimal and did no damage to the 26-year-old, yet he rolled around on the floor as if he had suffered a serious injury.

It is not the first time fans have had to put up with Neymar’s dramatics, and Wise, appearing as a guest on Yahoo Sport’ daily World Cup show, The 32, believes he will cut it out as he gets older.

“You don’t want to be remembered as someone who dives, you want to be remembered for your ability – which he has,” Wise said.

“He’ll think about it after and he’ll probably change a little bit as he gets older. He’ll think I didn’t need to do it.

“[It’s] disappointing – the way he reacted. OK, he trod on his leg, I get that. He should have just got up and got on with it, but he didn’t need to roll about in the manner.

“Maybe it was the responsibility of one his team-mates to pick him up and say ‘get up, what are you doing?’ We could all see he didn’t stamp, he trod, and there is a difference. There is a difference between them.

“He knew what he was doing and so did Neymar in the reaction. He wanted him to get sent off and [the referee] to look at VAR.

“What I do like about Brazil is the ability that comes out from some of the players, you see Neymar’s flick over the head and little flick.

“That’s what you want to see, not the other part. You want to get rid of that part of it.”
