Harry Redknapp fears we’re all getting a little carried away by England’s excellent World Cup showing.

He told The 32, Yahoo Sport’s daily World Cup show, that the Three Lions fell very short against the good teams in Russia.

The former Tottenham manager, a special guest on our sofa on Sunday morning, thinks England still have a long way to go to be able to challenge the big nations – but there were a lot of plus points to come from the past four weeks.

“We all got a little carried away, I don’t want to put a dampener on it,” said the 71-year-old, who said this World Cup was one of the best he can remember.

“We didn’t exactly beat great teams – Leyton Orient could have beaten Panama! Tunisia weren’t great either.

“Sweden were really negative and Colombia were poor and without their best player.

“The two good teams to have beaten us were good, and we came up quite short in the end when you look at it.”

But Redknapp says there were plenty of positives to take as England reached their first semi-final since 1990.

“Some players have elevated themselves onto a new level,” added the former Spurs boss, who was overlooked for the England job in favour of Roy Hodgson is 2012.

“There have been some really good performanced – Jordan Pickford, Harry Maguire and Kieran Trippier have been outstanding. Leicester have a job on to keep Maguire now for sure.

“It’s been a positive few weeks for England, there’s no doubt about it.”
