Manchester United winger Amad’s contract renewal is the latest positive in a season that has shown real promise from the Ivorian talent.

When he arrived from Atalanta four years ago this week in a deal worth up to £37 million, fans were suspicious of such a hefty price tag for a player that had shown little evidence of his proposed talent on the professional stage.

Upon arriving at Old Trafford the then 18-year-old first played in a United shirt for the club’s Under-23 side against bitter rivals Liverpool, in a game that saw him net his first goal in United colours after just 14 minutes on the pitch. Amad went on to net a second in what was the perfect way to get United fans excited about what was to come.

Amad’s first goal for the United first team came a few weeks later when he bagged the opener against Italian giants AC Milan in the Europa League at Old Trafford. Following a lofted ball forward from Bruno Fernandes, Amad showed an extraordinary piece of skill to flick a header over the enormous frame of Gianluigi Donnarumma, all while having his back to goal at the point of contact.

Two loan spells followed with the first not going to plan at Rangers in Scotland, but it was at Sunderland in the Championship where he emphasised his talent in forward areas.

Amad could have run his own goal of the season competition with some of the strikes he netted while on loan at the Black Cats, with his free kick in the play-off semi-final against Luton a particularly memorable one.

An injury prevented the Ivorian from heading out on loan for a third season as planned, but he then scored his first of three memorable goals for United that have since afforded him cult hero status.

In the final stages of extra time in a thrilling FA Cup tie against Liverpool at Old Trafford, Amad slotted home the winning goal with the club going on to achieve FA Cup glory with a win over Manchester City.

Speaking of United’s cross city rivals, it was against them that Amad netted a dramatic winner at the Etihad earlier this season as he majestically rounded a floundering Ederson in the City goal to win the derby, adding to his growing list of iconic moments for the club.

Amad then inflicted more pain on Liverpool when he swept home the equaliser at Anfield in front of a raucous and adoring United away end last time out.

Fans will be delighted at the fact that this mercurial talent has extended his stay at Old Trafford, especially due to his recent performances that have cemented his place as a key part of Ruben Amorim’s starting 11.
