4 things definitely happen to Liverpool in 2025 including Arne Slot signing and major contract calls
Considering the major changes that happened to Liverpool in 2024 — with Jurgen Klopp leaving, Michael Edwards and Julian Ward returning, and Richard Hughes arriving as sporting director — it is not easy to predict what might be in store in 2025.
You would imagine that the changes won't be quite so substantial, though it should be noted that Liverpool has coped well on the pitch regardless. But there are some big decisions that need to be made.
Here, Liverpool.com has picked out the four things we think will 'definitely' happen in the new year. You can let us know your thoughts — and whether you agree with us — in the comments section below the story.

Major contract decisions made
The single biggest question mark at Anfield at the moment is where the future of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah lies. With all three yet to commit beyond the end of the season, that has to be a worry.
One way or another, the decision will have to be made on each of the trio. Ideally, each of them would stay put and remain with Liverpool for the next couple of years at least — but that isn't certain yet.
In the 2023 edition of this story, where we looked ahead to what might happen in 2024, the decisions on each of Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold felt pressing. Now, though, there is another level of urgency. In just a few days' time, they will be able to negotiate pre-contract agreements with clubs abroad ahead of the summer.
Arne Slot seals first major signing
While Liverpool brought in Federico Chiesa in the summer, he has barely been seen since then. Giorgi Mamardashvili was picked up from Valencia, as well, but he has remained in Spain for the season.
In 2025, Liverpool will need to strengthen in a couple of positions. A left-back feels like a priority but that would likely mean moving on one of Andy Robertson or Kostas Tsimikas, while some cover for Ryan Gravenberch is essential.
Whether that is Martin Zubimendi, a Zubimendi alternative, or a different kind of player with Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones sometimes deployed deeper, it doesn't really matter. A midfield signing, though, will offer even greater depth and ensure that Gravenberch isn't overplayed.
In the Liverpool attack, there might be a need for another option to come in. Questions remain over Darwin Nunez while Salah will obviously need to be replaced in the worst-case scenario that sees him depart. Six senior forwards is a good idea when there are so many games these days, but the personnel could change.
Next group of wonderkids emerge
Liverpool always has a promising batch of talents coming through its academy system and that is no different at the moment. In terms of the first team, as evidenced in the recent Carabao Cup win over Southampton, Trey Nyoni is one to watch.
Below him, Rio Ngumoha, who was on the bench for that game, is also hugely exciting, and a decision will need to be made on Ben Doak when his season-long loan at Middlesbrough is over. The Scotland youngster is doing very well so far.
Some other names to watch: Amara Nallo, a promising center-back, Kieran Morrison, a talented and technically gifted attacking midfielder or winger, and Joe Bradshaw, a forward who has been impressing at U18 level this season, with seven goals in 11 league games. Jayden Danns, meanwhile, looks ripe for a loan to gain some more senior experience.
Silverware there for the taking
Liverpool is in a brilliant position in the Premier League table and should be the favorite to bring home the title from here. While nothing will be taken for granted, Manchester City is out of the reckoning now and that offers a major opportunity.
Chelsea effectively has no European soccer and that is a big advantage but there remain question marks over its goalkeeper and central defensive unit. Arsenal, meanwhile, is playing well now but has ground to make up.
Slot and his players know there is a long way to go but Liverpool should be confident. It has the most attacking firepower, experience of having done it before, and a points lead that it has built up.
Elsewhere, Liverpool should reach the Carabao Cup final by beating Spurs over two legs and will progress in the FA Cup too. In the Jurgen Klopp, Real Madrid will be there but the Reds should be as well. In Europe, no one will want to face Liverpool. With Manchester City floundering, there is an opportunity in that competition to take advantage as well.
