Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the most notable athletes in any sport, thanks in large part to his sustained excellence on the field.

As his Chiefs prepare to play in their fourth Super Bowl in five seasons and try to win a third Lombardi in that span, let's look back on the prolific quarterback's college days at Texas Tech.

Before he was a superstar quarterback, Mahomes was a budding talent down in Lubbock, Texas, who was working his way to being a starting NFL signal caller and also played baseball for a brief time.

Let's take a look at a few interesting facts about Mahomes' time at the college level.

1. Mahomes was a very productive starter for the Red Raiders

Mahomes threw for 11,252 yards, 93 touchdowns and 29 interceptions in 32 games for Texas Tech during the three seasons he played there.

He had a 63.5 completion percentage at the end of those years as well.

2. Mahomes played for Kliff Kingsbury while at Texas Tech

Mahomes' coach at Texas Tech was Kliff Kingsbury, who made the NFL jump from the college ranks shortly after Mahomes to coach the Arizona Cardinals from 2019-22.

He now is the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.

3. Mahomes won the Sammy Baugh Trophy after his junior season

It's an award given annually to the nation's top collegiate passer by the Touchdown Club of Columbus. He won in 2016. The award was discontinued after the 2018 season.

4. He declared for the 2017 NFL Draft after that junior campaign

Mahomes decided to leave college early and was taken by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 10th-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The rest, as they say, is history.

5. Mahomes entered Texas Tech's Ring of Honor in 2022

As you'd expect, Texas Tech recognized Mahomes with this prestigious honor less than a decade after he played for the Red Raiders.
