With Jamie Paterson already training at Ryton, hometown club Coventry City are handily placed to add the veteran forward to their squad, regardless of the January transfer window closing at 11pm on Monday.

The free agent 33-year-old can sign at any time now that he is unattached after a spell playing in the MLS, and City boss Frank Lampard seems keen, recently speaking about the player’s quality, fitness and “brilliant” character in the dressing room.

An exciting and versatile forward who can play on either flank, an attacking midfielder or a second striker, signing Paterson could complete what has been a decent window for the Sky Blues, who have already recruited Matt Grimes from Swansea City.

In fact, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before the former Bristol City and Swansea player joins City on a short-term arrangement until the end of the season. But he is not the only free agent out there.
