£70m sale, Alexander Isak move, Liam Delap bid - Liverpool sent Darwin Nunez transfer decision
Liverpool have a decision to make over the future of Darwin Nunez. The 25-year-old striker, who joined the Reds from Benfica for an initial £64m – which could rise to £85m after add-ons – in June 2022, faces an uncertain future at Anfield after falling out of favour under Arne Slot.
Nunez, who sees his contract expire in June 2028, has featured 26 times for Liverpool across all competitions this season, yet he's averaged just 53 minutes an appearance. The Uruguay international has failed to force himself into Arne Slot's starting lineup, with Diogo Jota often preferred down the middle.
As it happens, he's suddenly emerged as a potential target for Saudi Pro League clubs, according to Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel. In fact, Anfield Watch has reported that Liverpool have recently turned down a verbal offer in the region of £70m for Nunez from Al-Hilal.

However, the Reds are said to value him closer to the £85m. So, with that being said, writers at the Liverpool ECHO have given their thoughts on Nunez and whether Liverpool look to offload him this month.

Arne Slot needs to offload Darwin Nunez this month before the striker's market value plummets any lower. There may be Saudi Pro League clubs who could very well bail them out, but no team in Europe will be willing cough up anywhere near what the Reds initially paid Benfica back in June 2022.
Liverpool will lose millions on Nunez unless they receive a juicy offer from the Middle East, send him out on loan – where he can rebuild his reputation – or keep him until the end of the season and pray he strikes a rich vein of form before the summer transfer window opens.
Whatever happens, Slot needs a new striker. Liam Delap would be an excellent signing. As would Jhon Duran. Viktor Gyokeres looks to be on the market too. Liverpool need to throw the kitchen sink at a deal for an exciting striker.

Cash in. It's as simple as that for me.
It's the right time to part ways so Liverpool don't miss out on millions in the transfer market, there are better options out there and available to them. Although Nunez has shown he can score goals, much of the talk after his arrival from Benfica back in 2022 has been about the chances he's missed and the parts of his game that are lacking.
In my opinion, it's the perfect time to recoup some of the £64m transfer fee and bring in a striker more suited to Arne Slot's style of play. Liam Delap, Viktor Gyokeres are just two of the strikers linked with moves to Anfield in recent months and you'd back them to make a mark with the Reds.

I've hardly made it a secret that I don't think Darwin Nunez is up to the task at Liverpool but that does not necessarily mean that I think now is the right time to cut him loose. The Uruguayan could have a very important part to play in the second half of the season as Arne Slot's men continue to fight for honours on four fronts.
Playing in so many competitions right until the business end takes a full squad these days and with Federico Chiesa struggling to even get on the pitch at the moment there will be plenty of opportunities for Nunez to make his mark and finish the season with some medals - precisely the reason why he came here in the first place.
The summer is a different story however, and I wouldn't be shocked in the least if that is when we finally bid farewell to the former Benfica man. The only caveat to all of this is that if there is any truth in the report that suggests a Saudi club were willing to pay £70m for him I could see why the owners might sit up and listen because that is as good as breaking even on a big-money transfer that hasn't worked out.
But having said all that, I don't see Nunez fancying a move to the Middle East at this point in his career so a more modest fee to a European club in July might be the resolution. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the Reds should have gone for Alexander Isak when they had the chance two and a half years ago. The question is, have they got the appetite to go back in for him now?

Liverpool aren't going to learn anything new about Nunez. It's been long enough now for him to develop and show signs of smoothing out those rough edges and he just isn't.
The money paid for him was too much for the sort of squad and rotation player he has become and that means that entertaining offers has to come into play. The only thing is, do Liverpool really want to find a replacement because they would need more reinforcement up front.
What is the likeliness of anything over £50million coming from Saudi? It's hard to tell. He's certainly exciting and would probably score a lot of goals over there. That doesn't mean a bid is just around the corner.

Darwin Nunez has had enough faith handed to him over the past two-and-a-half years. Plenty of supporters felt they were done trying with him long before Arne Slot's arrival, but more were confident still that he could be the leading man in the new head coach's attack.
How wrong that has turned out to be, with more yellow cards than goals in 2024/25. It hasn't exactly dented Liverpool's title push but it is nothing shy of embarrassing for an £85m striker.
To learn of £70m interest from Saudi Arabia was first of all a shock, after that the immediate reaction should be: 'Take it!' Personally speaking, he's still good enough to play in Europe at the top of the sport.
Hopefully he can come good, but it just doesn't seem like that it will be at Liverpool. Recoup what is possible and sign Slot a new striker - Alexander Isak is the dream that slipped by in 2022 when Nunez was targeted instead.
And whilst we're at it get a centre back, and a midfielder, and a replacement for Andy Robertson too.
