Arsene Wenger admitted his Arsenal side were in shock as they conceded three goals in ten minutes to all but concede their Champions League spot against Bayern Munich.

The Gunners went behind in the last-16 clash to an early Arjen Robben screamer, before Alexis Sanchez eventually equalised, having missed a penalty.

Laurent Koscielny was taken off early into the second half, before three goals in ten minutes from Robert Lewandowski and Thiago put the hosts in command.

Thomas Muller wrapped up the thrashing, and the French manager admitted his side were completely displaced by Koscielny’s injury.

“We were solid defensively (before the injury) but after that, it’s very different,” the 67-year-old said. “It’s a shock, of course.

“On top of that, we made everything wrong, the fifth goal showed us that.

“In this kind of games you need to have luck on your side, be focused for 90 minutes. The third goal was a killer – after that we had no response.”

Wenger – not a stranger to touchline antics, having just served a four match ban for refusing to leave the dugout – was incensed in the lead-up to Lewandowski’s header which pushed the hosts ahead.

After Mesut Ozil back heeled the ball out of play, the referee gave a corner kick before reversing his decision. Munich went straight up the other end and scored.

And the Arsenal boss reckons the decision to overturn the corner caught his team unawares.

He continued: “It is difficult to explain, just before half time we had two good chances. We came back, played well, but were unlucky on the second goal.

“The ref gives a corner for us, the ball is on the pitch – a second ball – and with four players, we conceded the second goal. That’s one.

“It looked like we collapsed and it’s different mentally – we collapsed. They’re a better team than us.

“They played well second half, but we dropped our heads. We were a bit unlucky as well.”
