Aberdeen are closing in on bringing Latvia captain Kristers Tobers to Pittodrie, with the Grasshoppers defender set to cost the Dons £700,000.

Jimmy Thelin made the 24-year-old one of his top transfer targets, with both clubs having been in discussions for over a week now.

The Daily Record is reporting that despite the Swiss club being reluctant to sell, Tobers has indicated he is keen to move to Scotland, with the Reds now looking to finalise a transfer package and seal personal terms.

Tobers only moved to Switzerland last year from Lechia Gdansk, but he fits the modern profile of a defender that Thelin has used at Elfsborg and is keen to bring into Pittodrie.

Aberdeen are also trying to push a deal through because they will also need to push for a work permit.

The Dons have already signed Danish winger Jeppe Okkels on loan from Preston for the season, with an option to buy and also want Brommapojkarna defender Alexander Jensen.

Aberdeen are currently short of defensive options ahead of their weekend clash with Hearts. Gavin Molloy and Jack Milne are injured, while Slobodan Rubezic is suspended.
