Aberdeen are preparing to try and 'hijack' Rangers' attempts to sign Lyall Cameron, according to a report.

Record Sport exclusively revealed that the Ibrox club were working on a deal to land the Dundee midfielder when his Dens Park contract expires in the summer. Technical director Nils Koppen insists he wants the club to sign the best Scottish talent from elsewhere in the Premiership each season and they began with snapping up former Dons midfielder Connor Barron last summer, which a transfer tribunal determined they should pay £640,000 for.

But now the Daily Mail report that Aberdeen are attempting to get their own back by persuading Cameron that a switch to Pittodrie would be better for him in the long term, with more chance of regular first team football. The Dons can't compete with the salary on offer from Ibrox, but can to point to the career progression of the likes of Kenny McLean, Ross McCrorie, Lewis Ferguson and Bojan Miovski, who all flourished in the North East before earning big money moves to England or the continent.

Like Barron, any club that signs Cameron will be due training compensation to the Dens Park club for the 22-year-old. If a figure can't be agreed through negotiation, then it's back to the independent tribunal to decide.

Dundee boss Tony Docherty is still holding out hope of Cameron signing a new deal at Dens, with fellow academy graduate Josh Mulligan also approaching the end of his deal. Docherty said: "A couple have come back saying they’ll sign, others want to wait and that’s their prerogative.

"Lyall’s in that category. But I’m still hopeful."
