ADAM Hinshelwood wants to build upon York City’s impressive victory at Oldham Athletic in midweek.

The York boss oversaw his City side’s 2-0 win against promotion hopefuls Oldham on Tuesday night, with the Minstermen providing the perfect response to the 2-1 defeat to Sutton United on the Saturday prior.

Hinshelwood wants to use that performance at Oldham as the benchmark for York to match, starting with their trip to strugglers Boston United this afternoon (3pm).

“It was a lot more like what we’ve seen in the early stages of the season," Hinshelwood expressed.

“It was obviously a bit of a blip on Saturday, but it looked a lot more like what we wanted it to look like.

“We defended well and also showed the other side of the game, we played some good stuff at times.

“In the second-half once we were 2-0 up, we defended the ball really well.

“There was just a couple of times from the long throws, we switched off and they played it short, that’s when Harrison [Male] made his unbelievable save and good defending from Callum [Howe] to sweep up the danger.

“Other than that, we defended our box with a lot more grit and determination and gave a very good team next to nothing at their place.

“It fills us with a lot of confidence and a lot of belief, with 20 games to go it’s about finding that consistency and that belief, it’s so important.

“We showed a good amount of togetherness in the game, and now it’s about keeping that benchmark of a performance.”

Hinshelwood intends to take the confidence of the performance and result from Tuesday into the match at Boston, and hopes that it can be the result that rounds off a successful week, in the opinion of the City manager.

He also expects a different challenge from the Boston side that sprung a surprise at the LNER Community Stadium back in August.

Hinshelwood added: “You’ve got to back up big performances with another one on Saturday. Out of that week’s work, to come away six points will look a lot better, especially when we started with nothing. We’ve got to back up Tuesday’s performance.

“Going to their place will be a different challenge, and obviously it’s a new manager since we went there.

“I’m expecting them to come very aggressive, press us high and similar to Oldham, they tried the same by pressing us high up the pitch but we were very calm and played through it.

“That’s going to be the message again, let’s be brave and still play our way even though we’ll be under pressure.

“Can we deal with the ball, play through that pressure and play our way still.

“It’s a different kind of performance and a different kind of challenge to what we had here, Sutton sort of set off a little bit and we didn’t match them with our intensity or aggression.

“It’s a different game and a different manager.

“They’re probably a bit more possession based now, I think that their possession stats are around 50 odd per cent as well.

“They’ll look to have a bit more of the ball and I think that when they came to us, they let us have it and came with a great game plan.

“It was to let Callum Howe have the ball and have two versus one on Ollie Pearce, everyone was pretty much man marked.

“It could be different, but it certainly worked for them.

“It was a challenge, but I like to think that we’re a different side now and we’ve got to full focus on our performance, and make sure our performance is consistent.”
