Adam Hinshelwood 'not concerned' with title rivals' form as focus remains on City
THE impact of York City’s promotion rivals’ recent results is not something which Adam Hinshelwood is concerning himself with.
After Barnet battled to a 2-0 win over Hartlepool United in midweek, they took their lead to the top of the table to four points over Forest Green Rovers, with York themselves now six points behind, with two games in hand.
A result for Hartlepool would have been a benefit for City in their hopes to return to the Football League this season, but they wouldn’t be fortunate in receiving a favour from their North East competitors.
However, Hinshelwood refused to become too concerned on the affect that these other matches would have on how he and his team perform, with the City manager focused solely on the performances and results that his team can produce.
“Honestly I don’t get too bothered about it, because you can’t control it," Hinshelwood admitted.
“I get very bothered by our performances and how we play, but we’ve got no control over what the other teams are doing, so there’s no point getting too high or too low with that.
“I genuinely don’t concern myself with it, we’ve had it before where it looks good on paper with results as other teams have drawn or not won and it looks really good.
“Ultimately, Barnet are in an unbelievable position, they’re in the position that everyone wants to be in and are sitting at the top of the table with a bit of a gap.
“I think that games in hand are irrelevant, because we’ve got to go and do it.
“All of our focus is on ourselves and improving on those little finer details from the last couple of games, and putting it right in our performance.
“Even if Hartlepool had gone and won 5-0, we can’t control it. Barnet are a very good side, Forest Green are a very good side, Gateshead, Hartlepool, they’re all good sides and we’ve got to pay respect.
“At the same time, we know that on our day when we get things right, we’re a good side as well.
“We want to concentrate on delivering more performances in the next 19 games of us being a good version of ourselves, and not worry too much about what the opposition are doing.”
As a part of Hinshelwood’s hopes of competing closer with Barnet, he is keen for his players to find consistency after just one win in their last four competitive matches.
The City boss therefore wants the standards to be raised once again, similarly to how they were in the midweek 2-0 win against Oldham Athletic.
Hinshelwood added: “We did fall below our standards in recent weeks and we said about consistency, we had one good game against Oldham and then two poor halves in the last two [Saturday] games.
“We want to get back to more consistent 90 minutes, and that’s all that our focus is on.
“We know that if we can do that, then we will definitely be competing in most games from now until the end of the season.”
