Ben Wilson helped fire Airdrie to a vital victory against relegation rivals Dunfermline then insisted they can bridge the 10-point gap at the bottom of the Championship.

The Northern Irish striker bagged the third goal in Saturday's 3-0 win that clawed some ground back on the Pars and ended a 19-game wait for a league win.

And he believes that will give the Diamonds the belief they need to avoid the drop to League One.

Wilson, who took his tally this season to double figures, said: “The win has been a long time coming but I thought we were brilliant today. I was happy to score to help out the team and to secure the win.

“We had a gameplan and we stuck to it. It gives our fans something to cheer for and hopefully we can kick on from here. You can’t get too high about the win but we also didn’t get too low when we went through our bad patch.

"But we firmly believe we can get ourselves out of this."

The 23-year-old added: “We didn’t get to training on Friday [due to Storm Eowyn] but we had stuff sent out to us, video clips and analysis. We were all clued up and raring to go against Dunfermline. We knew it was a big game and that we needed to win."

Airdrie have 15 games remaining and host Queen's Park on Saturday desperate to get a run going.

Wilson said: "When things go against the team, you can't let it affect you. The full focus has to be on the next game and that's what we've done all season."
