Akinyemi a doubt for Oldham match as Howe avoids adding to City's defensive crisis
DIPO Akinyemi is a doubt for York City’s trip to Oldham Athletic tomorrow.
Akinyemi has struggled with a twisted knee injury since Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Sutton United, and actually sustained the injury in the visitors’ and Will Davies’ second goal of the afternoon.
A challenge on Akinyemi went unpunished by the match officials, and despite the striker’s claims for a foul, Davies found the back of the net.
Akinyemi would go on to play the remainder of the match, and even scored a consolation goal after tucking Ollie Pearce’s cross through a crowd of bodies.
“A couple are struggling, Dips from the impact of the second goal,” Manager Adam Hinshelwood confirmed.
“He’s twisted his knee, so he was struggling and was a little bit stiff today, so he’s a doubt for tomorrow night.”
Hinshelwood also confirmed that captain Callum Howe had avoided an injury, having missed six minutes of league action, his first missed minutes of the National League season.
Howe had caused City supporters a scare when being substituted off for Jeff King in stoppage time, however Hinshelwood has since confirmed that it was just cramp that the defender was struggling with.
King on the other hand is unavailable for the Oldham fixture, and will begin to serve his three match suspension after being shown a straight red card in the aftermath of Saturday’s defeat.
The boss continued: “Other than that, I think it’s pretty much a clean bill of health.
“Callum Howe is absolutely fine, it was just a bit of cramp towards the end, so he’s absolutely fine.
“In hindsight, we could have played a few more regular players as such in the game against Gainsborough, if we knew that we were going to have a two week break after it.
“That has disrupted us a little bit, looking at how we performed especially in the first-half.
“Players like Callum Howe like to be in a rhythm and playing, but the timing of headers and the more they play, it looked a little bit off at times.
“He’s had two and a half weeks now without playing competitive football.
“We’re hoping to get back into our rhythm and have no excuses, and really embrace the challenge.
“Obviously Jeff King will be suspended, so there’s potentially two missing there and we’ll see how Dips comes in the next 24 hours.”
With Hinshelwood facing something of a selection crisis with an abundance of defenders unavailable, the boss may look to the academy to fill out his squad for tomorrow night.
Ryan Fallowfield, Adam Crookes, King and Darragh O’Connor will all be unavailable due to either injury, suspension or recent loans away from the club, with Hinshelwood confirming last weeks that he had hopes of bringing in a left-sided loan defender to help bolster their options.
However, nothing has materialised despite Director of Football Tony McMahon’s best efforts, with Hinshelwood hopeful of using Tim Ryan’s under-18’s as a part of his squad.
“We’ll be looking more at bringing some youth team players into the squad, we’ve worked and Tony has worked tirelessly yesterday making calls and trying to get players in.
“At the same time, we don’t want to be hasty with it and just bring players in for the odd game, I don’t think it’s going to be too long for a couple more to be back.
“I want to keep it as a tight-knit squad, so it’s about getting that balance right.
“We’ve got 21 games now, and the last thing we want to do is just overfill the squad and when everyone is back fit, have a squad of 30 again.
“That doesn’t help anyone, so it’s just getting the balance right of what we need.”
