Newcastle United chiefs insisted on an 80th birthday celebration at St James' Park for club legend Bob Moncur last night.

The evening was another reunion for the surviving members of the 1969 Fairs Cup winning side with the likes of Pop Robson, David Craig, Alan Foggon and Jim Scott all present. Club icons such as former skipper and coach Mick Martin and legendary number 9 Mick Quinn also celebrated Moncur's big night with family and friends while director of football administration Richard Hines and commercial supremo Peter Silverstone represented the club's modern-day boardroom.

On an emotional night, Moncur shared stories on stage with club compere Justin Lockwood and Sky Sports news anchor Pete Graves and spoke of his remarkable life as player, captain, Scotland international, football manager, sailor, Newcastle ambassador and later director at St James' Park.

There was also a speech from Prof Mike Griffin who operated on Moncur during a successful battle with cancer with his off field tussles in later life providing inspiration to thousands.

Video messages from Alan Shearer, Mark Knopfler, Eddie Howe, Kevin Keegan plus Ant and Dec were beamed into St James' Park's Moncur Suite via a big screen. Moncur said on his big night: "I wouldn't have thought that after arriving as an apprentice in 1960 that I'd be celebrating this milestone at St James' Park six decades later!

"I'm honoured and slightly overwhelmed to be here! It has been great to toast the past, present and future with friends and family.

"I look forward to moments we will share in the future and here's to finally ending that reign as the last cup winning captain at Newcastle United!"

Moncur has always made it clear he is keen to lose that tag, and Shearer says, "Bob looks fantastic for 80! And before you start yes I know you are the last captain to lift a trophy for us! Hopefully, that changes very soon!"

Declan Donnelly said: "I can't believe Bobby is 80 - he'd still do a job at centre-back! We hope the team at Newcastle gave you a great celebration."

Keegan said: "To have a celebration in the Moncur Suite is richly deserved because you are an absolute legend." The night concluded with Moncur being presented with a framed and signed shirt from Ujpest Dozsa star and Hungary World Cup legend Janos Gorocs.

Moncur did not get to swap shirts with Gorcos during the club's 1969 Fairs Cup victory over the side from Budapest. But the shirt was flown over from Hungary for his big night.

Moncur then left the stage with Knopfler's Local Hero playing and had a tear or two in his eye. It was a fitting evening to one of the club's true greats with the tone set perfectly by Newcastle officials.
