Alan Shearer has hailed Alexander Isak as "magnificent" and believes the Newcastle United forward is one of three "world-class" forwards in the Premier League.

Sweden international Isak scored his 16th and 17th goals of the Premier League season on Saturday afternoon as the Magpies came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 and continue their remarkable run of form in 2025.

The 25-year-old is on course for his most prolific season in English football since signing for Newcastle from Borussia Dortmund two-and-a-half years ago.

And Shearer believes Isak, whose goals have Eddie Howe's side on course for a return to the Champions League next season, can now be considered in the same class as Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah.

Analysing Isak's performance in Saturday's 3-1 triumph, Shearer told Match of the Day: "His all-round game is magnificent. He is creating so many opportunities, getting shots away. His first touch is fantastic.

"I think there are three world class forwards in the Premier League. Erling Haaland being one. Mohamed Salah being another and Isak the third."

Isak has recently been linked with moves to Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona, though Howe admitted last month he was desperate to keep the forward at St James; Park.

"There's no part of me or anyone at Newcastle that wants to let Alex go. He's very much part of our long-term plans. He's first class," said Toon boss Howe after the 4-0 win over Ipswich Town in December.

"He's motivated and wants to do well. He has big aspirations with his career but he's still relatively young. His desire to score goals is second to none and regarding his future, everything has been positive. I would love for him to contribute to us winning a trophy.

"I don't think contract talks have started, but he has a long contract and when the time comes that will be discussed by Alex's representatives and the football club.

"He's very popular in the dressing room and that's not always the case with an out-and-out goalscorer. He plays for the team, not just for himself, and he's always willing to learn. I can't speak highly enough of him."
