Alan Shearer has revealed he was 'always asking' but Newcastle United never invited him back in the Ashley era after Demba Ba questioned why the club legend did not visit him.

It was a very different era, of course. After managing his boyhood club for eight games, in 2009, Shearer thought he was going to become the club's permanent boss after shaking hands on a three-year contract. However, Shearer got a call a few days later to inform him that there was an issue with the bank and that the club would be in touch. Shearer never heard from the those at the top again.

Shearer has previously spoken about how he felt 'ostracised' during the Ashley era, but those days are now thankfully a thing of the past after the billionaire sold the club. Shearer's statue is on club land, the bar at St James' Park is in his name again and the Newcastle legend has been back to the training ground on multiple occasions.

Shearer even gave a talk to the players a few days before the 2023 Carabao Cup final while the Magpies' all-time record goalscorer has also interviewed Alexander Isak a couple of times on Tyneside. After seeing Shearer sit down with Isak for a BBC interview, which will go out later this week, a 'jealous' Ba joked the 54-year-old had never visited him when he was 'on fire'.

However, Shearer clarified why that meeting never happened. "I was always asking the club man and they didn’t invite me then!!!" he wrote. "Hope you’re well."
